AMD Phenom II X4 965 Compared to Q6600

Easy rider, to answer your question WHY.

I have an old 775 motherboard, a Gigabyte P35C-DSR which is abit crap for clocking and am only running 4gb of DDR2 PC-5300 ram.

I feel that hardware is letting my HD5870 down abit.

So because it's newer you should buy it?
Not necessary, like not as a given but if I had owned a Intel®LGA775 chip since 2007 I think to be honest I would sell body parts to move up!

Of course IMHO think the Phenom® II™ X4 965 is a gratuitous expense but jonny-freshman can have a really nice time with it and try to get some 4GHz action without doing a degree in overclocking! ;)

quite a simple response coming from you for a change. :o

Haha thanks . . . sorry I do like to give someones grey-matter a workout sometimes, I mean no harm, it's just who I am, I help people as much as possible! :p

He's only had it 2 years (not that I don't upgrade more often than every 2 years, but thats besides the point ;)) so it's relatively new (in milage terms only just run in)

Yes theres nothing wrong with buying just to tweak and experiment and generally treat yourself but I thought you'd condone "Bang for buck"? and while the 965 is around £30 cheaper than a q9550 for an overall performance advantage too, it's also going to cost someone with a 775 setup an extra £50-£110 to get a mobo to drop it into, not to mention memory depending on what board he has already.
For two years newer technology its not much of a performance "jump" IMO

Good to hear, as long as it's impartial advice. :)

Yeah I do for myself personally and anyone with limited budgets etc but I'm not shoving that down your throat heh! :p

Most wouldn't do this but I would jump at the chance . . . for £0.00 if possible!

Put my order through thanks to my Girlfriend (early birthday presant).

Should be seeing the kit on Monday, build piccies will be provided for AMD fans.

For 9/10 games the Q6600 clock for clock should be pretty close as makes no difference maybe even faster in some cases to a 965. I think there must have been something wrong with the intel setup.

Even with an old failing mobo and 800 mhz ram !?

To replace my 775 kit, would have cost near to what ive paid for my AM3 kit.

Was (late) responding to the first post really... I've setup a few Phenom II X4 PCs for people and none of them have ever blown away my old Q6600 clock for clock let alone been much faster...

Infact the Q9550 I have now is noticeably quicker booting than my Q6600 and even faster booting into a fairly well used win 7 install than the Phenoms on a fresh install. Although thats not entirely fair to compare as this PC has a faster HDD setup than most I've built for other people.

amd 955 -956 same as a q9550

they are faster than the q6600.

would you move from a q6600 to a 965 maybe not if you new how to overclock to same speed. but then again how many q6600 will do at least 3.8

swings and round abouts and thing is if sold right he could bag a good deal on old stuff which would sweeten the deal and not make it a too big outlay
