Well it's a start I suppose. Race is a very complex topic, one that although I am certainly no expert, I do know a little about.

Defining a race by skin colour is very over simplistic:

The distinction of a 'white' race is from the 18th and 19th centuries. Our understanding of genetics has shown that many of the traits used to classify race are simple arbitary. Therefore, culture becomes much more important when defining race, the wiki page you quoted admits that.

Once you blur these lines like the science of genetics most certainly has, you can't just refer to a white race, as ethnicity is key to any modern classification.

They are both white but they're definitely not the same race, an eastern european has quite different appearance to a north western european and different still to a mediteranean european. They have different hereditary features, so even on that simplest of definitions they are a seperate race. Completely ignoring social or cultural differences.
