What is your job?

In 2007 I was in the Longton one and this 'Adviser' was being so rude that I stood up in front of everybody and ranted how I had been employed since 1974 and it wasn't my fault I was on the dole. I told her that I had applied for many jobs and there was no need to treat me like crap and be rude to me because I was already at an all time low. I also added that I wasn't like the people outside at 10am in the morning drinking from Carling cans
I got a standing ovation.

Yeah this is the thing that really annoyed me to be honest.

There's people who are standing outside of the Jobcentre every morning, addicted to alcohol and drugs and getting all sorts of benifits... I bet they don't talk to them that way.

Job: Regional New Homes Sales Manager for Europes Largest Estate Agency
Salary: 40K+
Working Towards: Regional Director (in at least 4 yrs time) (Im 24)

Im an ICT Technician by trade, But currently I'm working as a Data Entry Clerk as Technical support roles around here are some what slim at the moment.

So much so I've started rethinking my career, Just because I'm good at something on a somewhat natural level doesnt mean i should seek it out as a career. I've decided I'd rather be a fitness instructor and so i'm beginning retraining towards being on the REP :D I'm very excited about it

I hope you're better than one that rang me last year, it went something like this -

Hi, I'm .......... from Connexions in ............
How can I help you?
I have 2 clients with me and I'm helping them to look for jobs at the NHS
Well this is not really my job but but have you been on the NHS Jobs website?
Where is it?
Have you typed NHS Jobs into Google?
How do I get that?
Run your web browser and type in www.google.co.uk and then search for NHS Jobs (a lifetime went by with him mumbling on the other end) ...
Tell you what type this into the bar across the top www.jobs.nhs.uk (another lifetime passes by and he eventually arrives at the page)
What do I do now?
Search for a job
Where?
Over on the right side where it says Quick Search or click on the Advanced Search link

and so it went on to the amazement of the rest of the staff in the office but when they realised it was a Connexions Adviser they were gobsmacked.

That was me.

If you're half decent, PhD -> 1xPost Doc -> Lecturer is pretty straight forward (even at top universities).
I think good people might do this. But to suggest that it's pretty straightforward to go from one half decent post-doc to a lectureship at a top university is naive.

What about PhD -> Lecturer.
That would be fairly unlikely (at least at a decent university). But it's perfectly possible to do a little lecturing alongside whatever position you get, e.g. post-doc.
I've got to say, that's an interesting route for wanting an easy life!
After my BSc an easy life for me was getting as far away from academia as possible.
Ha! Each to their own I guess.

Job: Rail Engi (coming off Grad scheme next week so sorting a perm position).
Salary: Will be crap off the scheme being tainted with the grad cheap brush.
Working Towards: Chartership in 2+yrs, much experience, £50k+ by the time I hit 28.

Working towards - Teaching less kids and more adults. I started in adult education which was sessional, so I'm happy that I'm now full time but want to get out of having to work in classrooms that smell of teenagers and I prefer teaching people who want to learn.

Tell me about it

My lecturers don't like teaching the rowdy teenagers and prefer the adults.

Working towards: A way out of a job that destroys my soul every single day.. dubious business practices unethical and in some cases unlawful meanderings. I have to whore out my ideals every day :(

I deal with you lot on a daily basis.

Boo!

I don't know if my 'Working towards' was clear enough, but I can't stand it :p

Although in it's defense, all Connexions partnerships are seperate entities so they all work in pretty different ways. One region's poor work doesn't necessarily reflect all areas.

I feel sick for even defending it lol.
