For US sources TRSI are normally the main choice ....

Although personally I tend to use United Publications in the UK (www.up1.co.uk) ... they ship to themselves and then resend out to you so you don't have to worry about customs etc ... they also will ship to addresses other than the card holders unlike TRSI.

This means that unless something is in "immediate delivery" then the delivery time will involve that initial shipping phase too, (if it is in "immediate delivery" then they have it to hand to ship out).

Price wise ... UP are slightly more expensive but you are paying a less for shipping and not running the risk of customs charges.

To be fair a couple of the other sites I was looking at weren't exactly much cheaper, and some were more expensive. Shame its so expensive really, as thats never going to help people like me who haven't fallen for a series pickup their first disc!

To be fair this has been my favourite anime out of the ones I've watched over the last few years, so have no issues making it my first purchase, I think Horo is quite possibly the most complex and one of the most complete characters I've seen in an anime (and Lawrence isn't bad himself, but hes a lot stronger in season 2), she beats the likes of Kira/L into a bloody pulp, and quite frankly if I buy a copy, which then gets replenished from Funimation, then its one step closer to them picking up the second season (and indirectly contributing to the possibility of a 3rd season) via demand :)

Have United Publications been reliable/relatively speedy for you?

In my experience it depends on whether they have something on hand or not with how quickly things get to you.

If they do have it for "immediate delivery" then the package is shipped out (royal mail) on the next working day and will normally come the next day, (I ordered something at the weekend, it shipped at 13:12 today and I expect that I'll receive it tomorrow morning). If it is ships later in the day it does sometimes take an extra day to get delivered.

If it's a pre-order then things normally ship when they get things in which is normally around the ship date, (although it does depend on when they receive things from their suppliers ... I have had things a couple of weeks early and I have got something being packed at the moment which was released last week).

If items have to be ordered then it normally takes ~7-12 days ... most of which is their time getting the item shipped from the US. In comparison dealing directly with TRSI shipping normally takes 2.5 weeks to get an item to me.

I've had generally good dealings with them. Even when there have been issues (e.g. RM losing an item) then things have been sorted out well. I have had no issues with their reliability.

TRSI work out cheaper than UP, especially with Studio sales, but not by that much, and I do find I need to order multiple things to make it worth while with the shipping fees ... and you do run the risks of customs. I tend to use UP though for the convenience.

Brilliant, thanks for the feedback. Now I just have to persuade myself not to buy the book as well until there are more of them out (as they seem to be set 1 per 6 month period).
Still hopefully Funimation will pick up the second season as they've picked up the first, although that was only released about 3 months ago which is about a year and a half behind Japan, and someone will get round to confirming a 3rd season, as it seemed to be hinted at in the final episode of season 2 :D

Unless I go via a less reliable seller or wait weeks, from the sites I've checked UP do seem the most likely to get the DVDs to me in time to introduce them to my brother before he goes off and watches another marathon series. Most of the others were within £5, and on back order, whereas UP list as in stock. I asked Otaku.co.uk and they didnt think they'd have it for at least 3-5 weeks.
Edit: Ordered the DVD.

Good man :)

I suspect we'll hear an announcement from Funi fairly soon with regards to the second season, as it seems to have gone down well and sold reasonably well from what I can tell:)

Re the books, I'm going to order the second one soon, probably with some other bits due out around the same time.
There is a slip cover available for book one from some retailers (Rightstuf for example), which is the original Japanese art, whilst the normal cover is much less pretty to look at.

Re Clannad, aye, I think for After Story I'm going to try and watch it when i've got enough free time to sit through 3-4 episodes at a go.

Even with the contents, I'm not entirely sure I really want EITHER front cover on my bookshelf haha although the manga/anime styled once are much more charming.

I can understand why Yen Press needed to change the front cover though, there's lots of people, me included to be fair, who wouldn't just go and pick it up at a book shelf out of interest, even if the story sounded interesting, because we're just not amazingly big fans of anime (or in some cases are closet fans) but the new americanised cover is not exactly great to say the least, the shadowed out nudity doesnt offend me, but it doesnt speak of what the series actually IS.

They could have chosen a much better front cover, they really could have done, and there were so many ways they could have portrayed the series too; for example a table with some medieval style money, some posh clothes and an apple resting by a tankard on the top probably would have been better! Or alternatively a shadow of Holo/her head and ears cast over a table with a tankard and an apple on it, as well as the bag of grain would have been just as suitable, they could have even thrown in a big leather book on it with that Merchant meats spicy wolf line on it somewhere to please the 'hardcore'.
Hell, even a sillouette of Holo howling against the moon would have been a better moodset!

The second book is due in June isn't it?
Only gonna be about 2 years before I can order them at that rate :D

As an aside, does anyone know how the second season of Spice and Wolf did in Japan? From what I've heard that'll pretty much decide the fate of Season 3, even if US sales of the dubbed versions are decent because it'll decide whether the investors opt for another season [which I really hope they do].

I expect we will hear a license announcement for season 2 by, say, the end of April with a probably release date around the end of the year.

Note that, whilst UP are good for R1, if you want R2 it pays to check around. For instance, whilst they have some good specials on packs of singles for things like Ergo Proxy, their price for the upcoming R2 Anime Legends releases for Eureka Seven were, last time I checked, significantly more than Amazon UK.

I'd forgotten about Otaku.co.uk ... they seem to be pretty reasonable too but I have only used them for Artbooks or magazines instead of for DVDs.

I went with December's issues of the Yen magazine and got the cover from there ... yes it has slight folding issues but it's fine for me. The cover as published is pretty poor but it's not as bad as I thought it was going to be.

With Clannad AS .... you probably want to time it so that you can marathon episodes 16-22 is one go for plot reasons (22 being the last proper episode with 23-25 being extras) ... it'll be rough but I tend to find it the best way of doing that portion of the story.

More of Special A for me tonight as I made a start of the Pt2 boxset last night.

Hmmm, if anyone goes to order from Right Stuf sometime soon, let me know, if you're willing I'd like you to add on a copy of the S&W Book 1 if they've still got them in stock with the dust jacket original cover at time of ordering.
(Perhaps you, Werewolf as you mention you're going to preorder the second book and some other bits soon?)

If anyones happy to do that, I'd be happy to drop them the cash for the book and a bit towards the postage, if they just forward it on when it arrives, and Im happy to pay either when it arrives in the UK <Can check my trust account to see Im not exactly gonna pull a fast one, I'm thinking incase the order gets hit by customs and I need to put a little more than expected forward!>, or whenever is better, via say paypal. $10-15 just for the postage of a book alone would be a little excessive and a bit of a waste really, when I can buy the book over here without without the cover for a similar amount :D

When it comes to eccentricities I can be a bit of a collector, and much as it's silly, if Im going to grab the Spice & Wolf book series, I'd like to get the slip protector so I dont sit there thinking something is missing or I missed out, even if I dont use it, and I'm sure as hell my brother will sit there and harangue me about why I missed it off because he collects all this sort of memorabilia and collectibles and books and stuff, so he'd probably stick it on his wall as a mini poster or something if I dont keep it for the book.

Finished Special A earlier ... thought that it was a nice light series, not deep at all but reasonably funny at times ... a slight change from Gundam 00 :)

Have to see what's in the pile to be up next ...

It's sad that I don't get more leave (and pay) otherwise I'd go on the land only variant of this as it would be nice to have a guide who knows his stuff (I follow Danny's blog) ... ah well I'm out there a few weeks later so just need to do a bit of planning ... :)

(Cyber City Oedo 808, AD Police, Golden Boy)

There was a anime on Channel 4 probably 10 years back that I have been looking for recently.

Cyber City Oedo 808 sounds familiar, I did a search on imdb and anime planet and the story's match.

Is there some sort of evil skeleton dude in a corridor with pipes coming out of him? There was also a guy who had a gun that only works with his fingerprint, that's about all I can remember. :o

Hopefully!
Still, they'd better include the Episode 00 OVA; even if you refuse to watch the rest of the series until its licensed, I can't recommend this enough so make sure you watch it. It also gives you a slight opportunity to adjust to the slight changes of animation in Season II, coming from a different studio and character designer. Much of it is very similar but there are some minor changes.

From what I've read its actually taken from a side story from Book 7 (kinda like a memory, or a prior event which took place between Season I/II), and quite frankly I find it heartwarming.
The episode's taken from Horo's perspective (rather than Lawrence's) when she's sick, and her guard is lowered. I've seen a few complaints it's out of character for Horo compared to Season I, but I'm more inclined to think of it as just a glimpse at another facet of the character [because it's not like she wasn't multifaceted in the first season anyway]. In that sense, it gives you some insight her feelings, and perhaps gives some perspective to why she does some things she does in Season II, and at the same time makes some of what happens that much more dramatic and tense.

A couple of the scenes can also quite easily be taken different ways dependant on your viewpoint, so food for thought it there as well.

Oooh I didn't even realise there was an episode 00 OVA, hopefully they will get it either as part of the second season set, or as a seperate single release (like the Negima OVA's).
As you say Horo does let her guard down a few times in the series, and the first book so by the sounds of it, it wouldn't be too out of place :)

Technocorruption, Oedo 888 was definitely shown on C4, although it was probably closer to 15 years ago now  iirc part of the "late licence" block, along with Legend of the 4 kings/dragon kings, 3x3 eyes and a bunch of other Manga licences at the time.
unfortunately I can't remember much more about 888 as it's not a DVD I bought when it was released in the States (I think it was a CPM release there, and they went bust about a year ago).

I don't know if anyone has been over to AOD today, but it looks like we'll be getting FMA Brotherhood and a few other titles come August from Manga :)

I'd hope it'll be with the second season set, because the first season included the OVA episode 7 didn't it? Both series have 13 episodes including the OVA. The OVA while worth watching isn't really long enough to justify a seperate DVD by itself either, unless they did something funky like bundled say one of the translated books from Yen Press with it IMO.

Either way I'd recommend a watch ASAP...even if you have to go....errr...unlicensed to do so. It's a wonderful way to step into the second series, and actually quite funny at a couple of points as well, plus the tone is quite different to a lot of the second series so it doesnt spoil anything, it just warms you back up for another round :)

15 years could be about right, I forget how old I am getting lol. I remember watching it late on a Friday night.

I have found it on a site for £7 for the 3 ep collection. Even if its not the one I am thinking of, the reviews sound like it would be something I would like so its worth getting.

Edit: Just found a old trailer for it online and freaky skeleton dude with wires coming out of him was on there :D Definitely getting this now, watching that trailer brings back so many memories, its aged very well too.

Yep, I've seen the episode 0 OVA (actually thinking about it I don't remember if I have actually watched S&W2 ... but I know I saw the OVA ... so much anime so little time)

Put it this way, I would be surprised if it wasn't included when season 2 is announced, I would not expect it to be released separately.

As for when it'll be announced, slim chance for the upcoming Con in the states given it's nearness to Valentines day ... but more likely somewhere like Anime Boston in April, although I don't think it matters as I would expect the release to be about the same time as season 1 was released last year (December).

Anyway, went for some older magical girl style anime next having picked up Pretear cheap .... seen the first 5 or so episodes and it's ok, not great, and has the cringe-worthy transformation sequences you'd expect.

edit: I wish that someone would get the pre-orders up for 5cm/s and The Girl Who Leapt Through time for their April UK Blu-ray releases ... in fact you can add to that Summer Wars for September ....

ooh, 5cm/s and the girl who lept through time getting blu-ray releases?

I hadn't heard that (or can't remember hearing it:)).

Is there a list of announced blu-ray anime for the UK somewhere?

See here ;) in particular the link in WTK's post .... Anime Online does have a listing for TGWLTT but not 5cm/s. Supposedly at least one of them was announced at the London Expo last year.

Not the level of confirmation I'd really want though (although given how difficult it is to find any info on Manga UK's plans ...)

I watched the second episode of Katanagatari last night, quite liking it actually, despite the fact that around 60% of the episode was the two main characters discussing absolutely nothing... I really like the art style as well, worth checking out if you've not got much in the way of anime to watch at the moment.

lol, just lol .... looks at his current "to watch" pile of DVDs and shakes his head ... plus from other sources I'm only up to date with two Winter '10 series, none of the Autumn '09 ones I was watching and I've probably got ~6 series in my back log from each quarter going back for a few years ...

Plus there's the general anime DVD back log .... (which fortunately isn't too big now)

Trouble is that by the time the current "to watch" pile goes down more things are added to it .... and there's a pile of stuff I want to re-watch ...
