Just watched banner of the stars and thought it was very good despite its age. Anyone know if there are any sequals and what order they should be watched in?

The order is:

Crest of the Stars
Banner of the Stars
Banner of the Stars II
Banner of the Stars III (unlicensed)

There is also a Crest of the Stars movie (unlicensed) but I don't know where that fits.

I quite liked the series although I did have some disk issues with them, (well they are Bandai releases). Pretty sure they are OOP now.

Crap, I've watched it out of order then! Looks like I'll have to find crest.

Hmmm, embarressingly enough I've watched the entirety of K-On! in the last few days, after having it recommended because of how much I enjoy music. I dont think I've even seen clips of an anime anything like it before. Parts of me were screaming or cringing inside, but as a huge music guy, I just couldn't quite bring myself to not enjoy an anime fundamentally about bands and making music, with an element of comedy thrown on top.

Would have been a lot better if it's persued more of the rock/metal element that the story hinted it could a few times (especially as the ending is more of a raw j-rock style piece, although the video reminded me of the Alice Cooper/Marilyn Manson video style!), but I enjoyed it. The 'friendly, innocent' teacher being a hidden rock/metal girl with some guitar skills was probably just a cherry on the cake :p

Does anyone know of any other anime focused around music in some form (especially guitar/rock/metal-based), doesn't have to be serious at all. I know there's Dethlok but that doesnt really count in this context as its not an anime.
I'd never really thought of mixing my love of music into trying to appreciate anime before.

Not really watched anything completely music based but maybe detroit metal city, La Corda D'Oro ~primo passo~ (not metal though) and maybe nana (one's a punk rock person)??

I'm not purely a metal guy, music is just a very big influence and part of me, even if I suck at playing! I just enjoy rock and metal, and have a preference for stuff played on real instruments, or extreme synthetic, none of the RNB sort of stuff. Will take a pass by those series and see if they appeal.
K-On surprised me because it kinda grew on me, wierd really considering most of the music is j-pop, but I appreciated the musical emphasis of the series and the light tone.

Personally I really liked K-On! and am looking forward to the second season which is starting in April.

Other series which involve a musical element also include ....

Beck - (about an indy band starting out .... very good. Is licensed on R1 and R2)
Nodame Cantabile - More classical focus (also very good, but none are licensed (although it is possible to get series 1 on R3TW with English dub and sub))

Nana does have music elements, most of the characters are in punk bands, but the main focus of the show is really the friendship between the two main female characters and overall it's a very depressing emotion-fest. It is licensed on R1 with the final part due in April.

For what you want I'd suggest Beck.

Been watching Bleach - at ep61 - good god they waffle so much!!! It's like Dragon Ball Z - they just draw everything out over multiple episodes... I don't think I can get all the way through... just too much rubbish for too little good stuff.

Agree with you there. That's the first anime I every watched before getting into everything else. It was promising but I've given it up because of the ridiculous amount of lame filler and just getting bored of the limitless power characters seem to pull out their arses.

Anyone else seen Eve no Jikan (Eve of Jikan)? It was mentioned a while back but only just got round to it.

It's in 6 parts and looks pretty interesting so far (1st ep). I'm liking the animation style!

In the not too distant future androids have come into common usage. Taking the androids for granted, humans treat them as if they were common everyday tools, while on the other hand, some people empathize with androids due to their human-like appearance (save for a digital ring floating above their heads). This has become a social problem and these people are frowned upon as a result. Rikuo, one who has taken androids for granted for his entire life, one day discovers that Sammy, his home android, has been acting strangely and finds a strange phrase recorded in her activity log. He, along with his friend Masaki, traces Sammy's footsteps and come upon an unusual cafe. This cafe's main rule is to not discriminate between humans and androids.

I gave up on Naruto and Bleach a long time ago, far too many fillers in between the main story and it just got boring. Right now I'm watching the above, Tokyo Majin, Canaan, Hayate the combat butler (epic funny!) and Sora No Otoshimono.

I think over the past 5 years I have seen every popular anime that's been talked about on this forum but I keep an eye out for stuff I may not have seen yet!

Chobits was hentai?!

I thought it was hilarious :D

Pantsu.

The only anime series that have had me virtually rolling on the floor are Full metal panic: Fomofu, Hayate the combat butler and Yakitate Japan.

If you like funny, check those out :p

...

Yep, I watched it, (and purchased the episodes off CrunchyRoll as they came out to do so). I thought it was quite good and interesting although it could do with a few more episodes (I think that there may be some more coming actually .... vaguely remember remember reading something the other day ... actually it may have been something about all of the OVA being released together on DVD in Japan with some extra stuff). Nice animation too.

A DVD release with English subs would be nice.

edit: No it was that the first 6 episodes are being released in film format Time of Eve The Movie: First Season Complete Edition in Japan on March 6th.

Eve no Jikan sounds like a serious non-hentai version of Chobits, might give this a go, thanks

Chobits wasn't hentai at all  Also, I wouldn't class it like Chobits anyway as other than having humanoid androids they don't really share much in the way of story line.

full metal panic: Fomoffu,

Already plan to. I'm going to be rewatching the first season soon as I havent watched it since about 2005/6 and I'll watch Fumoffu after as I've heard its quite funny and I liked the comic aspects of FMP, but missed it first time round.

Oh, and I think this instrumental covers what I mean about K-On, and my gripes with the lyrics.

Ignore the lyrics which are decidedly Japanese/Girly (which this version removes, and there's no video) and suddenly you've got reasonably passable guitar track that certainly doesn't sound that bad, several of the other tracks used in the series also sound best with the vocals removed, as it means you can hear the solos and bits and pieces. Best listened to in 480/720p however!

Edit: videos removed so as not to offend anyone :p

Ignore the pictures and listen to the music and you'll probably see what I mean about these not exactly being quite the pop we'd be used to, without the lyrics they sound more like you'd find them on some sort of rock album. Plus how many UK pop songs contain solos these day?

Having imported most of the K-On! OSTs it's pretty good music, (Don't Say Lazy rounds off my commute play list for instance) with or without the lyrics ... but I wouldn't say it's outstanding; there are plenty of other Anime OP's and ED's which are just as good if not better ...

Watched the first half of the Funi Blu-Ray release of FMP:TSR earlier. Watching it subbed although FMP is one of the few franchises where I like the dub track on it. Image quality on the episodes is definitely better than the original DVD release although there are slight issues with the OP sections, apparently due to frame rate conversion related stuff during authoring.

Looks like my YUA Season 3 Pt1 and Evangelion 1.11 Blu-ray have dispatched :)

anyway ...

*sigh* do we really want this thread to turn into an endless series of Youtube clips of dubious copyright provenance? ... we've managed fine without them for the last 6000+ posts and I'd question how much it does for discussion when you can just make a statement and then dump in several videos instead of explaining your view point ... (and just having plain white boxes it pretty pointless for those people who have to spend most of their day behind a corporate filter ...)

Meh, the videos weren't intended to offend anyone, simply to show them what I mean. This forum offers youtube linking so I was making use of it to save people time :)

I never said K-On's music was outstanding either, I was simply pointing out the fact I personally think that the music sounds better without vocals, the rather light vocals change the tone of the tracks from what would otherwise be considered rock/light rock to a more poppy note. Its a series focused on music, so the bring up the music for the series is almost a given :)

K-On doesnt have my favourite OP/ED from the series I've watched either, however I was simply trying to make a comparative point, this being 'all things anime related' I figured it was as good a place as any to comment on it :)

Although we can all explain a lot of what we think about things, sometimes a screen grab or a video really can say 1000 words. I'm sure we've all seen images or videos that have triggered us to go watch, read or look at something.

Sorry if I caused any offence with my linking, that wasn't the intent.

No offence alex, although I think it may be best if we don't turn this into a youtube thread (I'm as guilty of that as anyone:)).

You're right about a picture speaking a thousand words :)

Memtselfandi, do you know if the FMP TSR disc is region locked?
I know it's relatively unusual with most of the non anime distributors, but have no idea about anime.

I just finished the last episode of After Story proper, and I really, thoroughly enjoyed it, even if it did result in me resorting to the hankies.
Definitely one of the better Anime series i've seen recently, and I think much more engrossing than either Air TV or Movie.
I'm going to watch the OVA/recap episodes tonight I think, then move onto Negima1? or Eureka 7 for a bit, before going to Glass Mask.

Yep, I think the odd one to make a point is fine but it would be very easy to descend into another post various Youtube videos thread ...

Unfortunately it is, (my BR player was set to region B and the first disk wouldn't play until I switched it to region A) ... I think that quite a few of Funimation's disks are region locked (with the FMA movie being an exception I have seen noted) ... I was going to say all, apart from that movie, are but I have a feeling that their Evangelion 1.11 disk is Region A/B ... hopefully I'll be able to look later.

I know what you mean about the hankies ... but it's well worth it, (incidentally In A Palm of a Tiny Hand, the song which plays after things work out, shall we say, better the second time, is currently playing on my iPod :)) ... I found it quite a bit better than Air with the latter being quite weak in overall story, but I suppose that Kyoto Animation had had more experience in Anime adaption of visual novels by the time they got onto this.

Negima!? or Eureka 7 ... ooo that's a tough one, Eureka 7 is probably the better series (have you gone for the new £15 half season releases which came out Monday and the same date next month?) but Negima!? is nice as well and would probably contrast well after Clannad AS. I don't know anything about Glass Mask as a series to come after either .... hmmmm .... I'd say if you haven't seen Eureka 7 before then go with that, if you have go with Negima!?

I should be able to finish FMP:TSR tonight which probably leaves me open for YUA S3 Pt1 tomorrow :)
