Impending redundancy, whats the crack?

On the road....
I have recieved 90 days notice from my employers of me being made redundant :( - I'm not overly bothered about it to be blunt, I am an HGV driver and I work at that depot under contract. Obviously, when the depot closes, the contract ends and no work for me.

Thankfully, I'm an experienced driver with a clean licence, so I'm pretty sure I won't have too much of a problem gaining another job.

The guys I do feel for are the many unqualified warehouse staff there, Tesco is one of the biggest employers in Middlewich and a lot are going to struggle to obtain more work. :(

What am I entitled to as per redundancy? - I'm asking here as I am on holiday this week and have not attended any of the meetings held about this - I did not even know about it until yesterday.

A few mates have mentioned £380 for every year served (4 years in my case iirc)

Its a while since I was last in this situation, so any advice / thoughts appreciated.

Ta. :)

More than 400 jobs could be axed after Tesco announced it is to close its distribution centre in Cheshire.

The supermarket giant started a 90-day consultation on Monday over the future of 426 workers at its Middlewich site.

First off, sorry to hear that, never good getting laid off.

My query hre would be...if you are on a contract basis surely there is no redundancy, just the end of a contract?

Sorry, I mis-worded that.

My employers (Eddie Stobart) run the distribution contract for Tesco at Middlewich, Tesco are closing the depot, Stobart therefore have no work for the drivers based at Middlewich, hence me getting my redundancy notice....

Theres a chance I could move either back to the Stoke depot where I was based for 3 years, Warrington, Widnes or Daventry, but given I moved from Stoke to avoid redundancy in the first place, I doubt this, we will see...

Anyway, cheers for the sentiment. :)

Sorry to hear that, but the governments redundancy calculator :)

Thanks mate, thats just what I was looking for.

- better than a slap in the chops! :D

Next question, if I am offered a different position, but turn it down due to distance to travel to work (i.e. I live in Stoke, but got offered a job in Carlisle) do I put my redundancy payment at risk by turning down the alternative offer of employment?

Sorry for my dreadful spelling as well, must get this keyboard replaced!

It seems Liquidfox has provided all the info you need, anything else from the company would be a bonus.

Sorry to hear that. :(

And OMG at the redundancy payment if you are right. Ah re-read, stobart, thats quite rubbish tbh.

I get a capped max of three years earnings for redundancy!

Sorry to hear about the redundancy.

Slightly off-topic, but given you work in Middlewich you might have met my dad, who is a VOSA vehicle inspector at one of the test stations there

Generally no, any mandatory relocation/redeployment has to be reasonable to be in lieu of redundancy, and that wouldn't be.

Hope it all works out for you.

Not had the pleasure, now if he worked at Doxey in Stafford or Swynnerton near Eccleshall at those VOSA sites, I would know him! - He'll know the places..... :D

Come work in "lovely" Widnes with me at the 3MG site when it opens. :D

To be honest mate thats where we thought we were all going, trouble is, Tesco then Shut the Middleton depot and moved all that work to Widnes, kind of leaves Middlewich high & dry......

On one hand, it is nice to see some investment and growth come into Widnes, but on the other it's not nice knowing that that investment came this way at the expense of other's jobs.

Here's to hoping the lads you work with can bounce back soon eh, I've been made redundant myself 3 times in 4 years, so I know the feeling.

It does get a bit complicated if the company has gone bust. I'm sure you're legally entitled to it still, but getting it may prove more difficult

Not at all, you just apply for it via the government and they pay it to you.
