Quick Question - Step up?

To sum up - for the money, that car is good value. However, you'll need to add another £1000 at least to get a 1.8t and even then, it'll probably have double double the miles, have double the owners and be older.

Ahhhhh, I think this might be the problem. People might still think I have my Focus and don't see why I should change. My Ford is gone dude; I smashed it up on 1/1/10 :)

I'll have you know my VAG diesel is a nice drive and a solid choice of car.
I can get to plymouth and back in it on £25 odd in diesel (A 330 mile round trip), it's comfy and it's got some guts where they're needed.

Considering I only paid about £2000 for it, it's not bad going.

You can't deny the 1.8 and 2.0 N/A engines in the MK4's were a pile of crap, they were slow, made of chocolate and burnt a tonne of oil.
The only engines worth considering from that era are the PD diesels, the 1.8T and the V6. Maybe the 1.6 if you don't mind a painfull slow car.

Neither is yours, we don't tell you its therefore worth 50p as a result. It's market value isn't affected by how good we think it is or isn't.

My sister needed a car. In the end we got a Mazda3 on a '54 plate for the same price as a Golf on a '51 plate.

Assuming £1.12/l (current price here) I calculate as 67mpg.

It's unlikely but not beyond the realms of possibility. I've seen 59mpg on a 200 mile run to London at normal speeds, including a blast down the M6 Toll. That's in an unaerodynamic city car with fat F1s on it.
 
10 year old Bora on the A38 at 70mph? No thanks. The A38 is not an arrow straight flat dual carriageway. It has plenty of twists and turns. No round trip involving that stretch of road is going to yeild almost 70mpg in a 10 year old Volkswagen Bora.

You wouldnt manage that in a brand new Golf Bluemotion with 10 years of economy progress behind it let alone a Bora.

Oh right, ok. Still worth looking at them though - meant to be a good engine.
 
Mrghm. Is this still a good price if he is refusing to include tax in the price? That's going to be an extra £200 or so?
 
I bought the car! It feels really good, much better than the Focus even though it has triple the milage. My mechanic friend didn't try to get money off him as it was decently priced already. Cosmetically, the alloys were eaten to crap and there is a small scrape on the lip of the boot. Inside is really clean and the lights work. Need to get it taxed today, that will be £215.

The last service was about 5000 miles ago which I don't even do in a year. It mentions the "pump" and "belt" being done. Would that be the water pump and timing belt? The guy didn't really know because it wasn't really his car. It was a car that he took in PX for another. My friend said that it was most likely both done at the same time if you're digging that deep into the engine? I wish I knew more about cars.

progress that is not relayed onto the road in 'normal circumstances'.

OP - I'd stay clear of that personally, if you are bored of a focus I can't see how that golf is going to thrill you in any way.
