*** The 2010 Gym Rats Thread ***

I don't bother giving people advice in the gym anymore - I just let them get on with it as long as it doesn't put me in harms way. If people come to me for advice, I'll give it, but I just can't be dealing with ignorant people anymore.

Steedie, sorry buddy, but you're being ridiculous, washing your car will not over train you.

Haha that's why I like you mate, straight to the point

I didn't mean overtrain as such, but if I have DOMS in my Tris and I'm polishing and doing a damn good job (even if I do say so myself) washing my car, which knackers my arms, I'm just worried if that's then putting more strain on my tris when they're trying to recover and hampering any recovery

Like I said, I thought I was being silly, but I always like to know :D

Nah, the load you'll be putting in your arms and your shoulders will be minimal - to "hurt" your muscles and body, you really need to put them under a lot of strain (i.e. weight) to cause them to actually cause microtears in the muscle fibres. I train when I have DOMs too - it's all good! :D

Right, I don't know if anyone can possibly allude to if this is normal DOMS or something else, but it's worth a shot I guess.

Recently, the last few times I've got to the gym for cardio, my lower legs (just above the ankle but below the calf) is causing me a lot of discomfort. I wouldn't say it's painful, but it's not comfortable. I'm able to run through it after a while, but it's starting to have an ill effect on my cardio as I've had to stop a couple of times to allow some rest. I think it might be my footwear (I use Asics, but I'm guessing maybe it's time to change and get my gait looked at). Of course, it could be nothing to do with my gait and just normal aches and pains from running very often. I'm not really getting to ever completely rest up my legs at the moment as even on my off days I'm walking around 90 minutes a day to and from work.

Ideas?

Anyone done any HIIT swimming before? Tried it this morning and it really ruined me, should be good for some conditioning 3 times a week.

I did something really stupid yesterday, was doing reverse flies and on the very first rep I could feel my left shoulder wasn't right, in fact if I'm honest with myself it was immediately painful. So what did I do? Went ahead and did my full lot of sets anyway, working through the pain.
The result this morning is my shoulder is completely ****** if I try to bring my arm backwards in a reverse fly type motion.

I'm such an idiot.

Its all part of learning weights tbh, hopefully if you managed to work through it, then it shouldnt be too bad!

If you are doing HIIT properly in the swimming pool then you should have drowned the first time you did it.

Tried it before and the risk of being unable to swim through fatigue means you really means you arn't hitting it hard enough. Get running outside or go on an Ergo for some proper HIIT!

How long do you guys spend on average at the gym? I usually spend about 1hr 30m, that includes warm up, weights (average of about 4x10 on 4 or 5 exercises, sometimes a couple of little bits thrown in too) and 10-15mins cardio at the end. Sometimes I do more weights at cut out the cardio. I do this 4 days a week, unless I go for a big bike ride on the weekend in which case I only go 3 times.

The reason I ask is that I want to start cycling to work (8 miles each way), the problem with this is that I don't have showers at work. So I was thinking of joining a gym and going to the gym before work, then I can use the showers there. Problem with that is that it only opens at 7 and I start work at 8:30, so after showering, getting changed, and getting to work, I'll probably only have about an hour for my work out. I'd then probably go to the gym all 5 working days; weights on mon, tue, thu, fri with cardio on wed.

I've tried doing my routine quicker before but I find I get fatigued quickly and that my form suffers for the last couple of exercises. Maybe that just means I have to lower the weight though...

Yup I tried it, and it ripped me to shreds.. not to mention I got muscle cramp in my right leg (calve). Havent tried it since lol, feel like trying it again though... any advice to prevent cramp?

Wonder if anybody has any suggestions:

I'd like to use milk in my PWO shake. They have a fridge in the staff room at the gym and I know all the staff except the manager who is a complete ***** and she wouldn't approve of me knowing the door code to get my milk. This means I'd have to find a member of staff each time to let me in to use it and then put it back.

I was thinking of putting a cool bag in my sports bag which goes in my locker. Along with an ice pack in it. I've also more recently thought a thermos might be a good idea? But not sure if these are any good at keeping things kool and are more aimed at keeping things warm!

Any suggestions?

Milk isn't going to go off in the time it takes you to drive/get to the gym and complete your workout if that's what your asking. You wouldn't really even need to bother with the icepack.

True, I just want to keep it chilled. Might plonk it into a small thermos I have with an ice cube or two.

In regards to your shoulder you'll find your lat, trap, pec and serratus are all linked with the problem. So if you can get a flatmate (preferably female) to give it a going over it might help to ease it up.

It's not necessarily the cause in your case but I believe that if you are dehydrated you might be more likely to experience cramp, other than that try stretching first and see if that helps.

Sometimes it's best to just take a few days off :) rest & heal up and then come back nice and fresh. Sucks ass not being able to lift though!

Thermos flasks keep hot things hot and cold things cold so putting milk in this will keep it cool for a fair whie :)

This is on the other side to my trap problem :( I seem to be falling apart all over the place!

I think I'll just leave shoulders until last in my schedule next week and hope it's better but then.

Haha. Don't worry mate, it just means you are training hard. We all pick up little niggles here and there, its part of throwing lumps of iron around day in day out :p If it is bothering you that much take a while off. I find you know if you really need the time off :)
