Be honest!

I've not raced anyone in the 4 months i've had the evo. I've had several "triers" but not as many as i though i'd get.

Most of them are kids in, without being condescending, cars that probably still wouldn't stand a chance if I turned the boost off.

It's simply not worth the fuel, the danger, or risking the license.

Most people who give it a go in more equal or better cars, do aggressive overtakes - usually on dual carriageway and even if I wanted to it is pointless to engage them as i'd have to do stupid speeds just to catch up.

An example was an E46 M3 who saw me overtake another car on a motorway (rather conservatively) and decided to come screaming up behind me and sit off the bumper. He was subjected to a prolonged washer jet spray and my fabled World's slowest lane change™. Much more fun.

He then pulled alongside me, revved his engine a few times and then zoomed off.

As said in other threads, knowing you can is half the fun.

I do however have blats on my own, usually in remote areas I know, where it is relatively safe. I personally don't feel the need to race other people to enjoy my car.

Whilst I'm all for enjoying the roads when appropriate I tend to have my fun when there's no-one else around, mainly because it's just safer that way and also there's always the niggling doubt that the car behind/in front of you could be an unmarked traffic car. Traffic light GP is something that I've just never seen the appeal of, sure if I'm at the lights I don't hang around once they go green primarily because I like to make progress in traffic where possible but if the driver alongside me shows signs of trying I'm quite happy to let them go.

same here

i do still worry though. there is the odd chance that on the long high speed left hander there will be a broken down car to avoid at high speed and there will be a car coming the other way etc

I don't think I've ever been baited - or certainly not knowingly.

I'd imagine a lot of the anti-speeders are guilty of not practicing what they preach.

Personally, I'd rather keep quiet as to my views on these topics as you don't really know who is reading them. There is a guy on PH (10 Pence Short) who had a rather nasty crash after losing control of the car - I'd imagine a lot of you on here have done the same thing. The only problem was that he ended up stradling the other side of the road and a biker hit his car and was seriously injured. The police saw a forum sticker on his car and the prosecution dug out a load of posts and used them out of context against him.

I generally post with that in the back of my mind, and I'd imagine quite a few others do. So the main opinion being voiced is that of the nay-sayers.

.

I thought I was the only one! :D

In the middle/outside lane, legitimately overtaking someone, some impatient so and so screams up behind me and sits there, desperate to get past. So once I've completed my overtake, I check my mirrors nice and slowly, apply the indicators, move nice and slowly into the left lane so as not to cause the 50 pence piece standing up on my dashboard to fall over, meanwhile the idiot behind me has booted it, expecting me to move over faster, and practically ended up even further in my boot. Tee hee hee

Since getting the WRX in Novemeber last year I must admit to do the odd tlgp a few times. Never with the wife in the car though!

I've noticed it has made me far more aware of overtaking opportunities too, but mostly just more frustrated at sitting behind slow people ;]

The amount of times you actually pull up at the lights next to somebody who'd race you are so minute you just have to wonder where some of these stories come from.

That might be your experience but personally its a daily occurrence, so I would not discount what he's saying purely based on how likely you are to get a little race now and then. :o

I'll second this. I live in one of the most prestigious areas in Florida (Windermere) and there's a lot of serious metal out here. Most of you know my rather illustrious history of supercars but as far as traffic light GP's go, I've probably only had a couple in the few years I've been here.

Yes I get people in muscle cars trying it on whether I'm in the 911 or the 430 but it's not that common. That's not to say I don't like pulling away from the lights quickly of course, hard not to with the sound of the 430 :)

I thought you had a C2S and a Merc something? A 430 owner thread would be something different...

I know people with National B that have been done for speeding, and I have had no issues with my MSA membership with three points for speeding either.

How do yours differ? I must admit, I do find it hard to believe that you'd lose them for something as trivial as speeding.

I assumed he meant losing his road license. If you're trying to imply he is lying and doesn't have a race license then I think you are barking up the wrong tree.

I've done just about everything that is deemed unsafe on public roads. Including getting 'air', unsafe? stupid? yes. fun? yes.

I am now a lot more sensible when it comes to having fun on public roads, and keep myself to back roads when it is as safe as it can be. But I ain't no saint.

You guys know my stance on it, even in a 1.1 fiat I'd still do it.

It's about a weekly occurrence, traffic light GP's I mean.

Other peoples safety? Have you ever seen the roads at night ?

I think a distiction should be made here. There are those that find it difficult to believe that living your life a quarter mile at a time in a vanilla Volvo estate cannot really be heady neon nights of flaming exhausts and lost pink slips.

There are others who are having a pious flid at 3 figures on a dual carriageway, racing or otherwise.

I've slowed down a lot to be honest. I dont drive cars fast anyway, not that I have a fast car, but I'm happy to just plod along in it, but I did break the limit almost constantly on the bike. Its one of the reasons I sold the 12 and went for the S3, which is fun at legal speeds.

It was actually cycling though that 'recalibrated' my sense of speed. Spending hours at 15-20 mph, with the occasional downhill descent at 45mph on a 23mm tyre brings its own adreneline rush! Jumping from that onto even a modest motorbike feels crazy fast again at 60mph.

I have been bad in the past though, so not going to lecture anyone else on how they drive/ride unless its idiots doing 50+ through 30mph villages - that really winds me up

I like a good hoon. I also like the odd TLGP but since getting the S2000 i've hardly had anyone trying it on or anything, it's rubbish. I had loads of fun like that when I had the 172.

My mate in his VXR always has people trying it on, he says he thinks it was sold with a Corsa stuck to it's bumper :(

I tend to read the road as I see it. I hope i'm wise enough now to be able to judge a road by looking at my surroundings as well as the sign on the post.

I do respect the law, I just tend to adjust it a little.

Let's say a nice straight dual carriageway road with very wide pavements and no junctions. If I can see the road ahead and theres minimal traffic about with nobody in the left lane that could cut me up, I will give it some Richard Hammond.

Once I've had my fix of acceleration I will then slow it back down.

I'm a very defensive driver and don't trust anyone else on the road. I'm always on the lookout for what other people COULD do no matter how stupid.
