Thorney Motorsport

I was looking into getting either Thorney or Courtney Motorsport to do some work on my VX220, I couldnt decide who. Decision now made :)
 
I've always been wary of John from both his forum posts on VXO and speaking to him on the phone, and this just confirms my suspicions.

I don't understand how you can give a car back like that with a straight face.
 
I know John and have done for a few years now, he hosted the BM3W meets in the olden days and I have also drunk beer with him too after Autosports International a couple of times. He's an OK bloke in my experience and I can only call it as I see it and though I have never done business with him I know several people who have and most have been over the moon. Having said this I have also seen many more recently that reflect this thread above and that is dissapointing, I detest poor customer service more than most so tend to deal with it quite ruthlessley at a personal level. I strikes me as a bloke who is trying to keep too many plates spinning and failing and anyone who has done that will appreciate how much of a downward spiral it can create. Hopefully John will put this right and get it sorted, he has some good people but like I have said on many occasions much of the 'tuning' world is subjective, though there is no excuse for being dishonest or providing sub standard work, not least on a performance car. Hopefully this will be sorted in time because on face value it does look like a poor show.
 
That 350Z is pretty bad, how your supposed to fix the holes left by the wood screws if you ever wanted to take the kit of escapes me! The screws are not even equally spaced or centred.

Has anyone read through that thread? What was the outcome in the end? To the car and bodyshop?

when the repair was started they found "structural issues" around the bottom of the a posts, i read it ages ago and cant see the pics

Stripped, repaired *including having a structural member that was cut and hammered in to fit the kit repaired*, new kit modified and fitted, repainted with custom colour - Amongst other things.

Think they said something like $14000 to repair it.

Took the guy to court and won $5500 - last time I checked he hadn't seen a single cent. Original bodyshop still open.
 
As was said at the top by the OP I would urge people to wait until Thorney has had time to put his side. These sorts of things can be damaging and are rarely as black and white as they may seem.
 
But with the amount of stories appearing/appeared on the tuning undertaken on some cars, it does seem to point towards the obvious.

Now where is that thread regarding some group buy on headers/soemthing that Thorney were going to sue some other company over, then promised to make them themselves for some silly low price. Then suddenly disappeared ;)

i honestly dont know what to make of john. He seems to talk the right talk about not leading people astray with fake dyno results etc.. but then we see dyno results from prominent VXRonline forum members that cant be repeated elsewhere. Naturally, because they are prominent members, the whole forum knows about the results, and it generates an enormous ammount of publicity for him.

Its difficult to call if he's just a habitual liar, and really it is all talk, or if the bloke is a decent guy but has good intentions gone wrong.

Pah I preferred my original thread title but oh well :p

Really hope this gets sorted, can't for the life of me understand why this guy parted with money.

I'm struggling to find a reason that Thorney could come up with for this. Even if the owner was impatient and demanded the car back, it seems far fetched. His posts certainly don't come across that way.
 
From what I have read, I would never do business with Thorney Motorsports. The breakdown on the vx220.org forums was enough alone to put me off.
 
It doesn't surprise me one little bit. It's entirely typical of TMS, there are many, many similar stories around, on the VX and VXR sites.

Two respected European tuners (who don't like each other) are in agreement that he doesn't have a clue what he is talking about. Quoting 23bhp for a remap only on a NA 2.2 engine pretty much sums him up.

In terms of PR, spin, putting on a show, as a pure sales guy the bloke is fantastic, but there's nothing of substance behind it, no automotive or engineering background, just lots and lots of manure. I wouldn't trust the guy as far as I could throw him.
