Budget 2010

However it also means those that drink sensibly have to pay more.. :(

That's why I hate the idea of taxing fatty/unhealthy foods as it just penalises those that have that sort of thing as part of a healthy lifestyle.

It does, but it still strikes me as fairer that those who drink more should bear that burden than everyone else. If you abolished alochol duties and just paid VAT instead, VAT would have to rise by around 1.75% (to 19.25%) to cover the lost revenue. Do you think that would be fairer?

What a surprise screw the rich over. Not going for votes are we, lots of jelouse little idiots will think this is great. 60% of tax rises will only hit top 5 % of earners. Nothing like a fair society.

look at it this way.
they can afford it more than those of us who are on 1/100th of their income can.

Again VAT is only levied if you make the purchase..

World uses 474e18J which is 474e15kJ which is 131772000000000KWh or 131772 TWh

Scotland uses 245TWh (3000kg of oil per year per person, 5mil people, 46.3MJ per kg), I was a factor of 1000 out in my KWh to TWh conversion :/

Which means that currently Scotland still cannot cover all of it's energy use via only renewable, and this is without any population or use growth.

Scotland only has a population of 5mil, now imagine the rest of the UK which has 61mil (England alone is 51mil).

lol at the conversion. :D

No one said that Scotland could currently cover either all energy use or electricity production, you are just stating the obvious and this has little to do with forwarding the discsussion.

Use has went down, as I have shown you the evidence. 2% less than 1990. Population, Scotland's has been in small decline/rise cycle for some time. Scotland population is very unlikely to change (removing immigration, this is a UK problem not just a Scottish one).

Well, tough cookies I suppose. At least we can do the right thing.

No, alcohol is NOT responsible for that.
Problems within the society are responsible for that.

Me, and my friends, have never required any policing or health care due to drinking relatively responsibly.

It is the same as gun laws, the cause of murder are not the guns but the people/society - you need to tackle that rather than just penalising the people who do no harm.

lol

Meh, I only drink the occasional bottle of cider anyway so it's not really going to affect me...:p

Those who drink sensibly or eat unhealthy foods sparingly do so in much lower frequencies, so the price hikes don't really impact us that much.

So, the stamp duty cut will cost £520m from 2010 - 2012, whilst rising the rate on homes costing more than £1million will raise £160m in said years...

Glad to see that we are plugging the deficit hole

Where are those figures from? This assumes lots of first time buyers! Which I doubt there will be many of tbh.

The nation isn't you and your friends though.

Why do you think guns were invented in the first place ?

You do realise that Scotland is given money each year from England due to the tax intake in Scotland not covering your expenditure, right?
So tough cookies to you lot when we stop giving you money and instead build nuclear power - while you lot can keep cutting use and go live in caves.

No, what would be fair is a minimal government only regulating and running the things that it HAS to run, while doing so at maximum efficiency.
Low taxes, higher economic growth.

Taken from the BBC website:
"A bit more info on that stamp duty cut. Poring over the figures in the Budget Red Book, we understand the measure will cost the Treasury £230m in 2010-11 and £290m in 2011-12. And raising the rate on homes worth more than £1m will not raise enough to plug that hole - raising an estimated £90m in 2010-11 and £70m in 2011-12."

I haven't looked at the Red Book so can't offer anything more than what is there.

I suppose it's looking at past projections for house purchases? It must be quanitifed somehow...

At least get it right, son.

Scotland doesn't raise any of its income through tax.

What a load of rubbish, nearly all of us can afford it, it's just no one wants to pay as we want to buy everything under the sun.
People should pay the same, should have a high personal allowence say circa 10k then 1 flat tax rate. Ambition and high level jobs should not be screwed over.

What's funny about that?

A person suddenly having a gun in their hand is not going to make them a murderer.

I realise that, and also can't think of any other way of sorting it (unless of course we start charging drunks at the hospital doors...), it's just a shame those people that can control themselves have to pay for the rest of the people.
