Slacker on long term sick

Your brother is in medicine, not a Doctor of the human body, he deals with medicine, hes a Pharmacist, doesnt sound like Doctor to me.

I think you need to look into which degree leads to being a GP before posting.

Well if you can't disprove stress then conversely how do you prove it? I wouldn't quite agree with not ill until proven ill - I'd prefer for people to be trusted until proven unworthy of the trust. For an illness that is difficult to diagnose or with symptoms that are not always distinctive then I think we've got to take the word of the person who claims to have it in the first instance - if we do it the other way round then we risk damaging their health further by possibly unfounded skepticism.

This is not to say that there won't be fakers or people who play the system but such is life, you can't have it all ways.

Good post. I would be very interested to see the number of genuine cases against made-up ones. However of course that will never happen.

Wow. So what degree of professionalism do you hold in order to make this lofty judgement? Or are you talking for your Cambridge-educated medical doctor brother again? To call psychology fancy toilet paper is more than a little strong, especially given the valid work they do.

I am an engineer. A fancy pansy psychologist told me I am dyslexic, however I finished 2nd year at the top of my course by 7% average over 2nd place.
I have no belief in them as a medical body of any kind.

My friend, the one I mentioned before says that a common problem with his condition is the in-ability to use public transport, it causes fear, anxiety and panic attacks. I guess that's not always the case, but this is information my friend received from his shrink and then told me, he found it interesting that it was actually on the most part a common factor in the illness.

*edit* the Dyslexia comment, Thats neither here nor there.
A guy in my class in school was dyslexic and he was easily the best in the school at maths, The basis for engineering.

Got a colleague at work, who's now been off work for over a month now. He says he's suffering from stress but reading his twitter feed, he's just working on his own personal projects at home.

Imo this is no different from benefit fraud. It's really gets on my nerves, that he's playing the system.

Rant over.

Mind your own business!

I know someone who is rather like this.
She is a civil servant, and indeed works within the benefit fraud department.
Hilariously she got transferred there as soon as she was able to apply.
Soon she started being ill, and eventually found a doctor who would diagnose her with fibromyalgia. An affective disorder with no physical cause. Perfect excuse for not coming to work anytime she feels like it.

She now claims sickness benfits in addiiton to her civil service pay and turns up occasionally full of life. Never misses a night out, and never has to attend the doctor for sicklines. The joys of working in benefit fraud I guess.

As you can see Im not an expert on the subjects, and I dont intend to be but I wouldnt dismiss someone cause theyre off sick with "stress".

If you put someone into a work environment they can easily develop stress, put them in a park and a swing stress is gone. You do realize that different environments affects people differently right? Or is your brother going to step in to disagree?

But you believe your brother straight away when he said so about this person with stress without even meeting him or knowing his medical background? Right...

If you work in a stressful environment that is what you are paid for.
Sitting with your mouth open on a checkout does not carry stress.

May be the OP is part of a team that has a very important deadline to work to. His work mate might be part of that team and as he is off work the OP may be working 12 hour days in order to get it done.

If this is the case then it is very much his business.

I disagree work and private life are two different things, he's being a nosy **** to be honest.

You pretty much just proved you dont understand the illness what so ever. Its not about the job at hand, or the difficulty of the job.

There comes a point were you have to tell someone to stop being a big wuss, get a grip and get on with their life.

Saying 'but the sunlight makes me happy I cannot go to work if the sun isn't out' is laughable.

Stress can be created by many factors, it could be you causing a stressful environment for him to work in, have you thought of that?
