scirroco gt :)

I think the Volvo C30 would count as a competitor?

Good call, though I think it's aimed less at the "sporty" driver, and more at the "just want to have some different". Not that it's a bad car, but I do get the impression that it's setup to be far more compliant.

One additional one I thought of was the 1 series coupe. Very marmite looks. Hated it when it first launched, but it's really grown on me since then. The diesel is also not that much more than the equivalent diesel scirocco. There isn't a direct equivalent to the 2ltr turbo, but they do have a de-tuned 3ltr (the 125), which has rather respectable performance figures and will almost certainly sound better than the VW 4 banger. Unfortunately it's a good £4k more, but as the old saying goes "ya gets what's ya pay for".

I almost love the 1 Series Coupe - the side is great, the rear is great, the interior is fine but... the front end ruins it for me. Shame as in 135i form they are real bargains and very, very quick.

Or you could buy a Golf hatchback.

I put a deposit down on a GT, expecting delivery mid-May. The car is lovely and the offer was too good to pass up.

I thought the 1 series was far less comfy than the Scirocco, and the interior of the 1 was lacklustre in comparison.

Pretty good car, but I didn't like the looks. Looks too much like a toy car from the rear.

Interesting. I rather liked the 1 series interior and thought that whilst the Scirocco drove like a fairly well done fwd hatchback (for which read fairly drab), that the 1 series felt like my old E30, i.e. ace.

The interior of the 1 Series is hugely specification sensitive. I had two in short succession - thought little of the first but the second had a different interior colour combination and better levels of equipment and was pretty good.

Certainly no worse than the old Golf interior VW are ripping you off with in your brand new Scirocco. Why do VW keep conning people like that? They do it all the time - a 2002 Mk4 Golf Cabrio is infact a Mk3 Golf with a Mk4 set of lights on the front for example. I think people are so blinded by the VW badge they can get away with things like this :(

Looks are such a funny thing.
I happen to really like the front end of the 1 series, I think it's the best looking bit.

Not really, given how much it costs and the fact it has an old shape Golf interior to boot.

Dont know where you get the thing about the interior from; which old shape Golf are you referring to? Interior of the scirocco was facelifted in 2010 and the R has a modified version of the new one - and is very nice indeed.

Most motoring journos seem to agree the R is a fantastic drive, albeit a hefty premium to pay over the normal 2L TSi. If I had the money I'd definately consider it. But I can understand people may not want to because of the badge.

Cheers

The Puma is renowned for being a fantastic handling small hatch, if you'd rather drive your Mother's Tigra then that's your problem ;)

If its such a good chassis then wtf is the racing version of it? Puma RS? Puma ST? Dont see one? Not that Vauxhall has one for a Tigra, and to be honest i dont like the tigra either but would rather be seen in one of them than a Puma, but i drive something else entirely. Also, why havent any racing teams bought them to use on track/rally if the chassis is SO good?

Have they changed it now? I know for ages the Scirocco had a Mk5 Golf interior.

I would love a 135i but I just dont see why the cost more then a 335i

I dont think they do - they are marginally cheaper if not about the same. I've been looking very closely at both 135 and 335 lately.

Well thats a Saloon. Compare a 335i M Sport Coupe with a 135i M Sport Coupe and its very rare you'll find the 335 much if at all cheaper. That isnt the cheapest 135i either, there are numerous examples starting from £21k. You wont get a 335i M Sport for £21k in Coupe form, unfortunately.

Personally I wouldn't give a stuff about the badge, but I would care which set of wheels it's driving, and IMO it's the wrong ones.

I didn't have leather or nav. It was dire, and the plastics (I sound like you now) were scratchy and horrible. The seats didn't feel well put together either, like I could push at the plastic trims and they'd flex.

I genuinely didn't think so.

I am not sure why anyone would care less if an interior was in fact "last year's". The interior is still a pleasant place to be (as far as a hatchback goes), it is very well put together and everything feels solid to the touch.

Perhaps if I'd have owned an Mk5 Golf and then moved to a new Scirocco I'd be disappointed by the lack of updates, but I'm not.

It didn't have a carbon copied Mk5 interior, but it was essentially the same. Seats, steering wheel, door panels were different from the get-go. The latest two updates to the Scirocco have brought more Mk6 cabin features in.. such as a different climate control unit, steering wheel, instrument cluster, voice control in the RNS unit.

Last time I spent any time in a 1 series, I hated the interior. Not so much the dash, but the plastics used everywhere else were cheap and horrible.

You're joking right?

I present to you:

The Ford Racing Puma (ST 160).

The Puma has always been universally applauded and raved about for years, if you'd rather drive your Mum's Tigra, good for you.

Now I know what the "D" stands for :D

Thought it was common knowledge the Puma was a highly rated car, I guess not.
