The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

meh had mine in the airing cupboard for about a week now and still no movement.

i did notice one put had a small amount of what looked like fur on the compost!
WTF? does it mean the compost was contaminated? only one pot out of three had it and they have all been within a few inches of each other with clingfilm over the top.

they were those wilko ones where you just open , plant ,water , grow.

i know 7 days is kinda early to expect any signs of life but whats with the fur?

Quick question. I tried planting a few seeds using a windowsill propgator which failed miserably, so after a few weeks I dug the seeds out and plonked a few of each into slightly bigger pots. It's worked and they've sprouted but now I'm left with 3 or 4 little plants per pot. Is this ok, or will I have to dig them out have one plant per pot? Thanks :)

I would go for one plant per pot.

The fur - probably some form of mold. The problem is that the growing seedlings can be quite susceptible to particular molds. It can be an indication that there's too much water.

Sorry to sound like a right simpleton, but can you not get seeds where you just pop them in a pot inside and let them grow on their own?

All this talk of rigging up lights and airflow etc is a bit baffling. My mum grows peppers indoor just by planting the seeds and leaving them to it!
Can the same be done for chilli's?

I got quite lucky with my dorset nagas. I literally just jammed them into some pots and left them in a room in my house. This was before christmas, so it was reasonably warm. I certainly did not give them any special treatment though. They have really started to pick up now the weather is getting better!

It depends on the light levels which depends on the type of chilli plant..

Nagas are used to more light though and they take longer to grow from seed to ripe fruit - that's why you tend to start them off earlier. Jalapenos, for example, are quick.

Yay! My bird's eyes are germinating!

But I have left them in the care of my gf for the next 4 days as I couldn't lug them from Chichester to London this morning.... hope she doesn't kill them, lol!

What sort of size pots should be used for say birds eye chilis and the "generical red and green chilis from tesco".

I have some seedlings growing and will sooner or later need to pot them up.

Grew some chilies in grow bags years ago and they turned into monster bushes that I am pretty sure used all their energy just getting bigger and not fruiting.

In fact is there also any maintenance that needs doing to stop "bush growing oooooer missus" and force them to start focussing on fruits?

I sowed mine in 75mm pots, moved up to 150mm when they got their first 'real' leaves and will move up to 200mm when they get bigger.

anyone ever thought about making a time lapse video? i stole my sons crappy webcam and found a free software you can use called "nimisis flix" that will take the photos at an interval of your choosing and once youve finished it will make them into a video.

i did a test earlier on a cucumber seedling taking one photo every 60seconds for around 80 minutes and amazingly there was movement

its only a 4 second video and not chilli related but if anyones intrested http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j3vGnEQR6YM you can clearlty see within what must have been the first 40 minutes it directed its leaves towards the sun.

its really simple to do and all you need is a webcam or other image capuring device

My chillis aren't growing the quickest so I hadn't planned on doing a time lapse for them however I got my kid to plant cress seeds and does those things grow! I reckon over a couple of days you could do a very nice time lapse video with something like cress. Was going to do it just to show my kid how his seeds turn into the plant, he'd probably think it was quite cool.

How easy is it to transfer them to different/bigger pots? Do they have delicate roots? Any particular method to use to save me from damaging them?

Actually, she is doing a fine job of looking after them!

While I was away my scotch bonnet did wonders in the prop, as did the other shoots which all need repotting now! So seeds have germinated but not all :( need to wait it out I think!

where did you buy those from? very cool

looks to be in decent condition aswell

the plugs and plants in wilko's are all nearly dead and they are in a store you would hope someone tended to them!

im amazed you recieved what apears to be healthy plants in the post

Given the lack of sunlight at night, would plants benefit from being kept in an airing cupboard at night for more warmth? I know night time is when root growth happens, but as my new place will have a huge boiler in the airing cupboard, and plenty of room for me to put my window trough in there, I thought it might be a good idea to overnight my plants in there.
