The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

We have ignition :)

Is used ground coffee good to mix in with compost for chillies? I was about to throw a load in the bin and my mum said i should put it on my chillies as its works as a natural fertiliser. Any truth to this or is she trying to kill them lol?

BTW guys, it looks like we could be getting some snow soon so it might be a good idea to move the plants away from windows if they're single glazed.

Just had the dominos Meltdown the revenge, uses birdseye chillies, that was more than enough for me!!

Do chillies add up or are they like sound where its only the loudest that counts? E.g. birdseye (100k) & jalapenos (5k) is that 105 or 100?

Good luck with your growing.

quick question guys...at what point should i repot my chillis into a bigger pot? and am i right in saying that i should only put one plant per pot?

Yes, you should really have one plant per pot. However by the time the seedling leaves are fully grown they've probably put out a large mesh of roots and may not be easy to separate. Usually with multiple seeds per pot, the weaker seedlings are culled in favour of the strongest.

The normal repotting time is really dependant on how limited the roots are. If you're using pellets then you can see the roots slowly take up the space around the soil. Once you see them attempting to break through fibres then repot. Alternatively if the seedling slows growth or has been in the same starting pod for a month it's highly likely it's ready for a repot.

Yes in a way - you're increasing the amount of capsaicin which is the 'hotness' in the food your eating.

Edit: correction - brain fried after work today..

My 45 watt light has come, man this thing is bright .

I didn't expect it to get so hot though, Ive set it up in a box lined with a4 paper with just the weakest plant in to see if it sets on fire or not before i put my other plants in...

The idea is just to get them to a decent size ready for some better weather.

thanks for the advice. at the moment, they are still very small plants, with very small leaves. i have one plant per pot at the moment. they are currently growing in those fibre-y feeling pots, i think the pots are made of dried peat? i may be wrong. anyhoo, i think they can stay in there a bit longer, theres loads of room. and i've been putting them in as much sun as possible!

Hehe If that was a HID it would 400W, require 5-6 foot between the lamp and the plant! And you don't even want to get near it let alone stare at it!

i nipped into wilkinsons hoping to find a selection in there "sow water grow" range but all they had were tobasco and peppers :(

i just thought "meh" and bought a tobasco ,bell pepper and a yellow bell pepper california wonder to grow in my kitchens south facing window.

better than nothing i guess i grabbed 4x 15cm pots , fertilizer ,compost and some perlite so ill try and source some seeds locally for some better chilli's if possible.

think i might try growing some cucumber vines on my first floor balcony aswell, just need to get a nice large container/pot for it..

for some reason my wife isnt to happy about me buying gardening stuff but its only cost around 16quid so far and my 5 year old seems really keen on growing something atleast.
he wanted to see the pots even though nothing is growing yet so i took them out of the airing cupboard after a quick glance at the pictures he shouted "this ones mine" lol tobasco one :D

I think Wilkinsons are doing 2 for £2 on perlite and vermiculite 5 litre bags. Massive bargain considering its £5 a bag from B&Q.
aparently they are no vermiculite to be found in my local wilkinsons which is a fairly big store (3 floors with a cafe) just a big empty space next to the perlite.....

was there first thing in the morning aswell when all the shelfs are fully stocked so guess they had non out back either :(

might nip in again tommorow and buy something lol just to pee the missus off :D

i bought 10litre bag of vital earth multi purpose, no big bits inside the bag so far all nice and fairly fine should be pretty good for the roots to find there way around i would have thought?

Gah, got a feeling it could be the same at my local Wilko (Burnley), ah well I'll have a look anyway.

£3 for 10l seems a bit dear for that compost but i guess you have to pay extra for quality. The growing bag i got is mainly filled with small sticks lol.

I`ll be very interested in seeing the results from the grow lamps, the chillies on my windowsill are small and straggly, mainly due to the lack of sunlight this year ( I think ).

Meanwhile, back at the aerogarden the plants were growing well and I potted them into soil on Sunday.

I was n't sure at what stage to plant them, but the roots were getting long and I was worried about them tangling with each other and making it difficult to extract from the machine. Got them out, and spread the roots out as I potted them.

Here's the ring of fire, this plant is going in my conservatory, the rest are currently on the windowsill getting used to being in soil.

Weather forecast is for a cold night Saturday, then three days of sunshine, so I will move them on Sunday into the new plastic greenhouse. I`ll get a photo of the aerogarden plants along with the windowsill raised seeds so you can see the difference.

Things seem to have been going quite well here, especially considering my flat has been freezing for my of February.

There's nothing fancy here, the seeds came from a chilli I bought on the market and the propagators cost a couple of quid from Wilkos.

**** Last call for Dorset Naga seeds ****

I still have a load, so if you fancy attempting to grow a bush sized chilli. Note - probably not a good idea with little fingers (young kids) due to their potency.

The reason I say last call is that they take a little longer to germinate (anything from 2-6 weeks). Then the time to grow. So you may get fruit later in than others here.

Just shoot me a trust and I'l post them free of charge.

Will it be too late for me to start in Mid April when I get back from my holiday?

Planning on the supermarket "chilli that i know" method...
