The 2010 Chilli growing thread - it's scorching!

i dont think it would be a good idea the temprature variation would be massive they need to get used to a climate.
how would you feel if someone stuck you in and out of the cold? ;)

your body gets used to a temprature much like a plant does.

AcidHell2im not expert but your plants look like they are drowning , the compost doesnt need to look wet it just needs to have some moisture.

if your a noobie consider getting a moisture tester or if you have a multi meter you can DIY one (they are just 2 metal prods that go into the soil and you can tell how much moisture it contains by the resistance)

theres some fairly good DIY guides to making one if you google

Surely the day and night temps in summer would be more of a fluctuation than day in sun, night in airing cupboard?

Hey guys I've just re-potted some of my jalapeno's however they're drooping quite badly atm (Which I've heard is normal) however They're about 5 inches tall atm but they're quite unstable. Do you think they will perk themselves back up or do you think they will require some additional support? If so what would you recommend I was thinking straws?

I got them from Simpsons seeds. Ordered them a while ago and forgot but they're quite late coming through due to poor weather so far this year.

I repotted them all and made a trip (again!!) to Wilkinson's, I'm really liking wilko's at the moment, they have some really handy bits and so much cheaper than the garden centre down the road.

Here are some updated shots of the ever growing fleet...

Have some of the newly aquired plants in the post today in the prop to get them going a bit, as well as the seeds that have now started sprouting.
I have no idea what I'm going to do with all of them once these seeds all need repotting mind!!

Dorset Naga (will repot tomorrow I think to a bigger pot I bought today), Serreno and Bird's eyes.

the other 2 that came in the post.
:D
Well chuffed currently. I had the drooping issue when they were first repotted on some of them but with some water and light they soon popped back up. I would support if they look like they're suffering a little though, I have to train them young in case as well.

All of mine have been potted.

I have Scotch Bonnet (the big plant, it seems to be growing very fast), Jalapeño, Habanero, Cayenne and cherry Bomb.

The trouble with Wilkinson's is that anything I buy from there always breaks and the people that work in there (at least in my local store anyway) are very strange :p

whats broke? most gardening stuff cant break?

ive had no problems with the cheap plastic pots and troughs from my local wilko and all the seeds ive bought so far have germinated.

the plugs and plants in the store look like they are on their deathbed though

right... after almost self pepper gassing myself I have deseeded the chillis - the damage is 5 sneezes, streaming eyes and yes I managed to give myself chilli eyelid on my left eye..

Please be careful with the seed and wash your hands carefully after handling them. My original seeds actually left a patch in the palm of my hand that hurt for a couple of days - you have been warned and I cannot accept any responsibility with what you do with them!

I have put in a minimum of 4 for each person. I know this isn't many but it's better that we get enough to people and if you get four of these you'll be disappearing behind a jungle!

As I have said before I can't guarantee they'll germinate but these seeds are all from the fruiting tree in the old thread and the same fruit used in my blitzing hot king prawn thai noodle thread. Fingers crossed.

I will send out an email to those just to confirm they should be on their way - two people, I know the internetz is great but I can't send chilli seeds through email.. so please respond to my email :)

I still have a few seeds left over (after reserving for those two people) - first come, first served.

Confirmation mail sent Nick and just to say here it's very much appreciated. Thanks.

Just wondering about temperature differences, particularly at night. In the morning I put mine out in a sort of grow house thing (not as big as a green house & made of a plastic mesh) as it faces south but bring them in overnight in case night temps are a bit low for them.
Is it safe to leave them out overnight yet or is it better to wait another few weeks until night temps pick up a bit?

How long have you had the naga Quicklink? you got a right collection going on there mate :)

Jay

Had that one since last year. Did them quite late in the year but shot up with 3 plants but one died soon after, the other biggest died over winter but this one has fought back and is budding so hope it'll be good fruiter this year. This is the most I've ever had on the go, all fingers crossed I can manage! Haha

All the staff in mine are possibly delivered there in the morning in a small white transit with sunshine bus written on the sides tbh! I don't tend to get anything but garden stuff from there really too as I don't doubt it'll be crap. Some things though, just a steal!

The weather is supposed to pick up end of this week, getting up to like 16 (tropical!!) so could be worth waiting to see at the weekend as it's still been pretty nippy of late.

:)

Cheers Nick, Email sent back to you. Do you think they will fruit this year with it being late on?

Thanks again

QuickLink, i take it you kept them inside over winter? This is my first year growing chilli plants.

Jay

You shouldn't have any issue with them fruiting this year, it's not that late really.

Yep, all kept inside through summer and winter as the temps weren't stable at all before!
