Hi all.

Just had my 3rd Samsung hard drive failure in a month. :(

First, one of my new 1Tb F3's was faulty on arrival, so was swapped out.

Then a less than 1 year old 1Tb F1 that I had started making some funny noises.

And now, the brand new replacement F1 sounded so bad that I pull it out immediately!

Safe to say, Samsung has not shown itself well here.

So I was thinking of this instead:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HD-226-WD&groupid=701&catid=14&subcat=1279

A little more expensive, but the 5 year warranty gives me hope that perhaps it will last a while.

Now, the thing is, the main reason for getting the Samsung was noise. I like the fact they are so quiet.

So what are the WD's like, noise wise?

Thanks.

What did I do?

For the F3 and the replacement F1, I plugged them in. Thats it.

Didn't get as far as formatting or partitioning.

Unlikely since I have had this PSU for a while and have had no problems. That includes the replacement F3 that I got alongside the one that arrived ok.

As for the replacement F1 that arrived today, the scraping noise it was making suggests it wasn't a power problem.

I would buy the drive you linked without a doubt. Western Digital make very reliable drives im my experience and that's a fast drive as well.

Depends which model you get. I have an REII, so it's pretty loud, but I'm sure a Green would be near silent.

Perhaps someone with a WD Black can clarify.

Can vouch for the wd black drives. They are quick and near silent drives.won't
be disapointed with this drive.

To be fair, it isn't too bad compared to the Samsung F3 in those tests.

I am also assuming that it uses 500Gb platters?

For some reason I didn't think to look at the rest of the review, the one they use has 333GB ones hence the much slower performance. I just think I read somewhere that they now used the 500GB ones like the 2TB black but it may have just been someone asking now I think about it.

Same here with regards Samsung drives. Had 3 fail and the 3rd replacement 640gb shook my case to bits, thats why they are cheap. It was fun throwing it under a road roller thou.

All my drives are WD now with 1 Seagate LP.

I am thinking of changing my Samsung Spin point 500 GB for a WD drive, but which one?
I have a SATA II drive now, If I recall my mobo has SATA 3Gbps ports so the WD 6Gbps of the SATA III drives would either be not compatable?

Update...after a little reading I have just ordered a WD 1TB SATA II Black, lets see how much better it is over my 2 year old Samsung Spin point SATA II 500GB HDD.
