COuld someone provide me with some advice on this photo please:

f/8, 1/80s on tripod, 18mm on Nikon D40 18-55 kit lens. Why does it look - frankly - quite poo in terms of image quality even after I've sharpened it and corrected the perspective? The front of the cathedral looks ok, but the side is just a mess to me. Could it be camera limitation or in processing?
I then tried aiming for a subtle HDR effort (my first) using Photomatix using 7 photos (-1, -2/3, -1/3, 1, 1/3, 2/3, 1) and that's the result. ANy opinions? Edit - barely HDR'ed in fact on 2nd thought!
