Icelandic Volcanic Eruption - Significant Disruption to UK Flights

Is it worth the risk?

Nope

the dust is very abrasive and also it can easily clog a jet engine, not only that but any plane that has flown though it would probably need to be thoroughly checked and serviced to make it operable again

it would cost a fortune

Was a rhetorical question, but I agree with what everyone has said.

As for the dust, like others have said - it's been pretty dry lately, and even before this happened dust was being deposited on cars.

It's far less likely to be 'volcanic' than average dust I'd say.

Our car is always covered in muck due to farmers ploughing and sowing this time of year and crop spraying every year it's the same ground dries bit of wind and dust is everywhere. Nothing whatsoever to do with ASH

Sad thing is I just had to tell my mom tonight the odds on my flying home on Wednesday are pretty slim just waiting on Ruinair cancelling the flight so I can rebook ...

If that KLM statement is legit then it angers me that these airline bosses will risk peoples lives just to make some money...

From what I was told today by controllers in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany:

Belgian and Dutch airspace is pretty much completely shut to any form of aircraft, including GA planes.
French is open at the very tip to GA aircraft (Le Touquet and Calais were open for it) but anything IFR (Instrument Flight Rules) is suspended.
German airspace is open to VFR (Visusal Flight Rules) flights, but at the pilots discretion, IFR are suspended.

We were phoning every major airport in the above countries to get a small plane in there to do a quick pick up, and only Dusseldorf was either A) Open, B) Allowed you to fly in, or C) Contactable. Every other major airport we tried was grounded or shut. That caused a hell of a lot of hassle. Still, we got it sorted.

The more interesting thing was our pilots reporting smelling sulfur at 3,000ft, always pleasant.

Just heard from my sis-in-law stuck in Portugal. They have decided to get a hire car and drive to the north of Spain, then get an overnight ferry to Portsmouth, then drop her friend off in London (who is supposed to fly back to California) and then continue to Edinburgh. She isn't expected home until next Saturday, when she should have landed tomorrow. It's just surreal!

Saw a strange thing today too - two fighters in very tight formation circling low around Prestwick airport, five times before landing. I was with my wife at the time and both of us stopped and watched. I didn't think any jet aircraft was allowed up in the air! It's just really weird at the moment.

Good point. :)

A friend and I have been meaning to do the Plym-Santander ferry on foot, spend a few days there and come back. Never had the time or the money at the same time yet :(

Do you know how long it takes on the ferry? She was saying it might be about 15 hours . I'm trying to work out when she will be back. Looks like it might be Friday into Portsmouth, but then it could be a day before she gets home.
