Icelandic Volcanic Eruption - Significant Disruption to UK Flights

Is this going to have any effect on ticket prices 5 months from now?

a) Prices rise as airlines recoup losses sustained during this period?
b) Prices fall as airlines try to re-attract customers put off during this period?
c) No change?

It's difficult to make that call as it is largely dependent on how long the disruption continues for and if the airlines do begin to fly again, the effects of any residual ash in the atmosphere.

There is the possibility that aircraft can fly in current conditions due to the dilution of the ash but it may reduce the serviceable life of the engines and airframes. This will increase maintenance costs to the airlines and may well drive up prices.

Unable to get the missus back to the UK for a immediate-family funeral on the 27th which is ripping her to pieces.

We bought a Return Ticket on our one way trip (1. in case of emergencies (the date can be pushed back for £80 each time, for up to 6th months) and 2. it was cheaper) but Virgin wouldn't give us anything before 29th out of any city in the area. We tried Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Oman, Bahrain and Qatar. Grrrrr.

Fortnately whilst typing this the guy answered the phone and i think ive found a flight on the 26th via Vienna on some Budget Airline. Better than nothing. I wont be able to go though but as long as she gets there.

Joke shamelessly stolen:
I guess following the death of teh Icelandic Economy it's final wish was to have it's ashes spread over europe.

Sorry if its been done to death.

Just looking at the volcano webcam, it's still too cloudy to see the volcano and whether it's still kicking out ash/smoke.

However, yesterday the clouds were blowing from left to right across the camera, today they are blowing from right to left. So it looks like the wind has changed direction there, though obviously this is just the low level wind rather than the high level stuff. I wonder what effect this change will have?

There has been loads of 'test' flights now over europe. There are currently 4, they all vary in height but one is at 17k and another at 20k feet

The latest Ash Advisory:

nah definite ash on cars around here. very very light coating but it wont be doing any good considering its bits of glass/rock
Yup, you definitely don't want to be wiping it off. And hitting it with the hose is just going to turn it into mud. Cautious carwashing for awhile there!

Definate eh? Volcanologist are you?

Are you?

It's really common for Saharan sand to be dropped on the UK after big sandstorms when the prevailing winds are from the south. Why is it so hard to believe that ash is dropping on the UK in tiny quantities, when we know it's in the air above the UK in fairly large quantities?

what are them 2 planes floting fround austria right now do you think ?

Flight Number : AUA1406
Company : Austrian Airlines
ICAO Hex Code : 440133
Reg Code : OE-LNS
Model : Boeing - B738

Latitude : 47.60115
Longitude : 16.23038
Altitude : 4876 m - 15997 ft
Ground Speed : 687 km/h - 427 mph - 371 knots
Squawk : 61
Heading : 39º

I'm guessing it's one of the test flights....that will be fine because the ash isn't doing anything to the engines.
