Icelandic Volcanic Eruption - Significant Disruption to UK Flights

We still haven't got any clarity regarding what the government is doing to get airspace open

WOT LOL

Get a giant hoover? Whats this guy on

Probably Valium as he wonders what to do about his package holidays and £5 million a day disappear into thin air. ;)

A senior Western diplomat says several NATO F-16 fighters suffered engine damage after flying through the volcanic ash cloud covering large parts of Europe.
The official declined to provide more details on the military flights, except to say that glasslike deposits were found inside the planes' engines after they patroled over European airspace.
Last week, two Finnish Air Force F-18 fighter-bombers suffered similar damage while flying through the ash plume that has paralyzed air traffic over much of Europe. Both landed safely, but their jet engines will require expensive overhauls.
Volcanic ash tends to stick to a jet engine's interior parts, such as the turbines, where it melts to form a glassy coating. This restricts air flow and heats up the engine, leading to engine failure

Doesn't look good then.

Sue who exactly? If the FAA say it is safe to fly, it is safe to fly
I expect the Yanks to get some proper readings also rather than just use computer models

I thought you were saying the Americans would ignore the risk and fly anyway.

What a mess...a european mess and highly embarrasing lol

IATA are criticising the european govts who have closed their airspaces lol....

Feel sorry for the people stranded...good thing i didnt decide to fly to Canada/America last week...changed my plans to the summer.

Despite the ongoing issues, i'm liking some of the footage and pictures of this volcanic eruption.

What exactly do they expect the governments to do lol!!

Can you imagine the uproar if they opened up a airspace and plane crashed......

IATA are just crying over it's members losing so much money.

Southern Iceland - Eyjafjallajokull, an Icelandic volcano has been spouting lava since Sunday but scientist are more concerned about the damage Eyjafjallajokull's neighbor volcano Katla may do if lava from Eyjafjallajokull melts Katla's top thus causing Katla to erupt.

According to one of the National Weather Service's Alaska Region scientist, Gary Hufford:

"When Katla went off in the 1700s, the USA suffered a very cold winter... To the point, the Mississippi River froze just north of New Orleans and the East Coast, especially New England, had an extremely cold winter... Depending on a new eruption, Katla could cause some serious weather changes."

Katla is expected to erupt soon since research has shown all previous Eyjafjallajokulle eruptions have been followed by Katla eruptions as well.

YIKES!!! Scientist think the world could be plunged into an extended deep freeze, a Global Cooling!!!

Uh, terrible! From Global Warming to Global Cooling, Mother Earth has been dishing us humans a lot of extreme weather and extreme events to deal with lately: multiple earthquakes, tsunamis, floods, terrible heat, freezing temperatures... and now a potentially massive volcanic eruption. Truly frightening times. What's in store for the rest of the year?

Indeed airspace is not a european issue each country has the right to their own airspace it's still sovereign and quite rightly so.

Did the US seek IATA approval before closing it's airspace in 2001 did they do a risk assessment? I very much doubt it.
:o

These are volcanoes soon could mean a couple of 100 years in geological terms also the eruption from "faceroll" might actually ease the pressure on the other one.
Still interesting times ahead.
