Yeah it's a beast. It has 0 spread as well so when you get your small guns stats to 100 the bullets will always go exactly where you are aiming. It can also be repaired with standard hunting rifles.
I just started a brand new game, had finished the main quest and I was just starting out on Broken Steel again when I got bored and decided to restart from the beginning. I've just finished the Wasteland Survival Guide, killed Mr Burke and defused the bomb in Megaton, completed the Replicated Man quest in Rivet City, finished the Blood Ties quest, did a few other bits and pieces as well. Oh, and I took a trip over to Tenpenny Tower, went into the Boutique Le Chique with a stealth boy equipped and then reverse pickpocketed a mine into that womans dress. She blew up, I nabbed her key and took everything from her store then snuck back out.
By the way when you get the chance make sure you make the dart gun, it's one of the best weapons in the game as a single shot instantly cripples the enemies legs and starts draining health per second meaning you can kill most enemies in the game with it, without taking any damage as you can just back pedal while they amble slowly toward you.
You can get schematics for it from Tenpenny Tower and the MDPL power station which is in the north west corner of the map, near to Raven Rock. You do need to kill a Radscorpion for it's poison glands though, I think the other items you need will be a toy car, surgical tubing and a paint gun, as well as the poison gland. The darts you find in ruined houses are your ammo and seeing as they are pretty much everywhere and in big numbers per box you should never really run out. 1 shot will kill most enemies and 2-3 shots for the larger and more powerful enemies will do the trick.
