*** The Official HTC Desire (Bravo) Thread! ***

That charger will be fine. All manufacturers appear to be ging the micro USB way for uniformity.... I can see them selling the phones without chargers in a while to save money/environment as most ppl have dozens of chargers for old phones that cant be used.

All manufacturers have agreed to adopt micro SD for charging now. Well all apart from Apple :)

A wifi and battery life question.

If the phone is taken outside of range of my wireless network, is it as much of a drain on the battery as it would be were it connected? Ie do I need to disable wireless to conserve battery when I am out of the house and away from my network?

wifi will drain far more power than any 3g network will, my guess is it will regardless of where you are as it will be constantly hunting for a wifi spot

With Wifi enabled by default the phone will constantly be finding and notifying you of networks, this will use some battery but not much since it's not utilising any bandwidth over the wireless other than listing available networks. You can disable network notification (checkbox on that screen) so it only hunts when you open the Wifi settings screen. You can also click menu here and change the sleep policy so wifi disables after x minutes of being left idle.

At the end of the day my phone doesn't list WiFi as a battery user in the battery usage screen with it being just idle when away from home. What drains the most battery is low cell reception.

You can add a switch widget for mobile data/wifi/bluetooth etc to the home screen to quickly turn on or off those features if you want.

When its searching for networks it will use more than when its off obviously, and it will hunt for new networks when not connected/in range of your network. So yes it's an idea to do that, or just make the changes Khaaan suggested :)

A very expensive app from the market can do this for you automatically based on cell tower/gps location, but I forget its name :( It also does things like switches notification states and volumes based on time or place

Feel free to rubbish this as per ;)

I beg to differ tbh, my touch hd will last me 2 days of normal useage maybe even 3, if wifi is on im lucky to get one day

Your TouchHD uses a different OS and has different hardware so is going to have different levels of efficiency. Android tells you exactly what part of the phone and OS has used what % of the battery. I don't know how to do that if at all on Windows Mobile but my post is based on observed stats given by the phone itself, not something I've conjured up willy nilly.

Sitting at work with Wifi on all day connected to the router next to me I have 57% battery by 4-5PM and during that day I have checked emails, loaded some webpages, checked status updates, let the phone sync with twitter/facebook and also checked apps out and so on. Even then "Android System" consumed the most battery while "Cell Standby" (work is in a hilly ditch so reception is average) consumed the remaining chunk, WiFi didn't even register in the top 5 battery drainers.

I've been reading the thread about the data usage on Vodafone's forum, its looking more and more like a actual limit rather than fair use. I don't know though.

T-Mobiles looks attractive at 3GB though, anyone here have any experience with their customer service? I know there will good and bad for all of the networks, but a general idea would be good :).

Check out this thread on the Vodafone e-forums: http://forum.vodafone.co.uk/topic/5...500mb-allowance-be-enough-for-internet-usage/

I think the important post is this one:
"Yep sorry but you're totally wrong on this. There's numerous Desire threads where the Vodafone eForum team confirm you WILL NOT be charged automatically for going over 500mb. In fact the general consensus is that unless you are teathering or going way way over your limit month after month, then you will hear nothing from Vodafone. "

i think that statement is wrong, i have been with vodafone since start of feb and never done more then 300mb as i usually connect to wifi but got desire yesterday and put my sim and used data as my wifi on desire not working properly and today i got a text from vodafone that i have almost reached my limit and i will be charged 50p for next 5mb..... (it resets 2moro)

That's the thread I have been reading, I'm not sure what to think of it yet.

An app called juice defender has this option, it can disable wifi when far from known networks, presumably using tower location. It also does lots of other things,

Locale, $9.99. It's the dogs doo-dahs mind and the only app I've paid for. As I approach work it auto-silences the phone, at 11pm it switches off all data connections and mutes the phone so I can sleep without interruption, but has an exception that puts the phone on loud if a family member calls (i.e. an emergency). Free add-ons for it also add functionality like wake-on-lan.

Ok. Ive had my HTC Desire a few days now, and this is how i find myself feeling about it.

1. Soon as i opened it, i knew it needs some form of protective case
2. Setting up was easy and a breeze (if your not tech savy , then god help you)
3. Customization is the key to being happy with the layout and feel to this phone
4. Screen touch and feel is a delight (vivid and clear colours) Live backgrounds are at first fab, but i got bored quickly here !
5. The one speaker the Desire has, is pretty lame.
6. You HAVE to add apps and widgets to get anywhere with customising the sounds and ringtones. Volume output on external speaker seemed very low even at max settings (i used a nokia 5580 before)
7. Media players by default are not as friendly as i hoped ! (adding new apps fixes most of my niggles)
8. Headphones supplied are useless (charger and very long micro usb lead are supplied in box)
9. Ive found the battery life quite decent thus far ( customization is the key here , and not being stupid playing on it hours on end on battery life alone)
10. Always use wi-fi in home (Apps to turn off 3g/bluetooth/gprs etc etc is a must) Its very easy to rack up a lot of downloaded data at first.
11. Try not to compare this to a iphone, it isnt !!!
12. The 4 gig micro SD card supplied is lame (was a samsung class 2...erggghh !). I added a 32 gig class 6 micro SD card (ok im an idiot, but i prefer more space than i could possibly need !)
13. Camera is decent, so is the video capture (considering the specifications), however dont expect it to be brilliant, although it would have been nice.
14. Web browsing is lovely, equal to the apple everyone keeps going on about.
15. Adding contants, setting up syncing options, and all the phone options is a REAL pain at first (stick with it)
16. GPRS is decent, although far from perfect, and google maps is ok, if a little inacurate. Google earth on the desire, is wicked thou :D
17. Flash related web pages are still not 100 %, no BBCi player yet ( the beeb player is lame if you ask me)
18. FM radio works, but dont expect DAB radio features.
19. Once set up correctly texting and making phone calls is pleasant
20. I found the bluetooth a bit flakey (need to look more into that !)

Thats enough for now. Overall im very happy with this phone, but it does take some getting used too. I expected far to much with this phone, as i did with the iphone. I find with the Desire, the customization makes this phone what it is, and its a keeper.

My 16GB Class 2 is perfectly fine imho, if you're happy paying for that 32GB Class 6 though /jealous I just can't justify the price for them atm!

Also can leave 3G on when WiFi on at home, will always use WiFi.
