How can so much support for Labour still be present?

Simple, I voted Labour because I didnt want to risk 3 things that vitally important to me...

Those being:

> Labour Promise on Cancer treatment (my dad is suffering from lung cancer at the minute and his treatment so far has been nothing but exceptional)
> Help with Child Care costs
> The Sure Start system

Now I don't know whether these will change or not under a new government but I voted based on whats important to me and in the 3 areas above I cant fault them.

The exit poll was spot on then.

From what i see lab + lib dem still may not have a combined total to beat the tories. I think there will be another election.

Huge swing here, in what was previously a Labour constituency we see a 12% swing from Labour to Conservative and they take the seat.

I was one of the people who did the Exit Poll in Loughbourgh.

Although quite surprised that a few people wouldn't take part.
Even though it was just marking who you had just voted for and putting in our ballot box, completely confidential.

Tend to do Exit Polls at marginal seats.

If Tory's hit 300, and get DUP support (8) I think it will be okay and ignoring Sinn Fein's 4 (as they can't vote)... 308 to 322 should be enough - you only need 14 abstainers/absentees.

you lose the local MP system we've had forever.

Would this be such a bad thing? How effective and useful to you is your MP? And for most of that "forever" it was a pretty corrupt system.

The vast majority of people wouldn't know their MP if they sat next to them on the bus, and it's hard to say what difference most MPs make. So hanging onto the current system just because we're afraid of change isn't really too compelling.

Reform would undoubtedly cause new problems, but I think it's an inevitable (eventually!) part of this democracy growing up.

I am outraged at all these people who have not been able to cast their legal right to vote. This is terrible, each area knows how many people are in that area and should have made adequate arrangements to handle that area. Already heard of an area in Sheffield with 5000 people who were not able to cast their vote. Utter disgrace I think.

Something should be done about this immediately. They should still be able to cast their vote today, as there is an area in north Yorkshire where people cannot vote till I think the 30th May due to one of the members of a constituency passing away very recently.

They should have got off their lazy backsides earlier, the stationts have been open since 7am and you could post vote ages ago.

When they showed the one station on TV at about 20 past 10 we saw people still walking up to the que, it was well past cut off and they only just bother turning up.

If people are that stupid its probably for the best that they didnt vote.

I'm sleepy. A long night.

Interesting results, hopefully tories can keep a majority over a possible liblab effort as the last seats roll in.

agree to a point. Some people maybe unable to get till certain times due to work/family constraints. I hear what you are saying and I can agree to some point.

Bah Tessa Jowell is still our MP... and she got MORE votes?! And con lost lots of votes, but LDs did better. WHY?! Bloody council estates and benefit scroungers :(

You really can't brand everyone as lazy, though undoubtedly the ones strolling up after 10pm are.

I used to always be one of the first in to the polling station when I had my last job. But now I work all over the UK, I left home at 5am yesterday and didn't get home from work until 7pm, and I'm sure there are plenty of folks in a similar situation.

If I'm doing the same sort of work next election, I'll probably switch and do a postal vote. But for me that would be missing out on physically going to the polling station and really feeling like I'm playing my part. It just isn't the same putting a form in an envelope, to me at least.

There were massive queues at my polling station last night, but I was lucky that I was able to vote as I went there straight from work at around 7pm, I have no idea if they had to turn people away later.

I'm very happy to see that Redcar booted out the useless Labour crew and got the Lib dems in instead. The fact they (Labour) did virtually nothing to save the Corus steel jobs can't have helped. Lets hope the Lib dem guy will do some good.
