He's stuck between a rock and a hard place now.
Go with Labour and look really really bad, and will do badly in the next election
Go with Tories and get almost nothing he wants (espically PR!)

Gordon Brown is a moron, I hope he doesn't dig in and make everything stupidly awkward.

It would certainly be in character for him to try.

Conservatives have proven they deserve a good chance of governing the country, and I think its fair to say the vast majority of the public want them to try it.

The "vast majority of the (voting) public" don't want them to try as they only got 36.2% of the popular vote.

A quarter of the votes for a tenth of the seats? This is stupid.

Depends how the other 9 turn out, but just to round it off Con - 305, Lab - 260, Lib - 59.

59 + 260 = 319. That's another 7 for a majority, could be done with some sweet talking and amazing negotiating skills. I think that's the best case scenario now, if it's possible not to have Gordon as PM. In all seriousness, the PM is little more than a figurehead, and the country really can't have a figurehead that nobody likes. Clegg has demonstrated that he can appeal to the people, and with Brown at his right hand we could certainly have a workable government.

That is, if another election isn't called because of the shambles that happened yesterday.

Why don't we just vote again until some one has a majority instead of all this coalition rubbish.

If people wanted Tories in power they would have a majority right now, but they don't.

Only one way to decide.........

I really cannot see the lib dems letting this chance go.

If they dont get PR, it will make Clegg/Lib Dems look like *****.

MANY within the Conservative party dont want PR and they HAVE been very vocal about this, they dont even want a referendum on it.

If Cameron gives Clegg PR he will have people after his head.

Odds on another Election in the Autumn?

CLAP CLAP CLAP.

Spot on.

Maybe if we did something like 'second round voting: now just vote between the top two parties' otherwise we're likely to face the same result.

Remember if we vote again it costs MILLIONS and MILLIONS. and voter apathy goes absolutely bananas if we ask Joe Public in 1 week to go through all the hassle of voting again :\

An opportunity to help run the country would be great but Cameron just made it clear that they'd have to abandon virtually all their key policies so what good would that 'power' really be to them?

But surely getting any of their policies made law is better than none of them? Its not like the LibDems have a chance to actually have a majority to make all their policies live without PR or a huge shake up and swing in support.

I think LibDems maybe tempted, they have the first opportunity in decades to make a difference on a national scale.

If you think about it, they have lots of policies but they now have the chance to make some stick.

Well no, because the vast majority of the country voted for parties other than them, so clearly do not.

Yes, however that is always the case, and the Conservatives are surely in the best overall position in my opinion.

You are bound to disagree though if you aren't a Conservative voter, I fully appreciate that.

It's unfortunate they have fallen short though, no doubt about that.

Here's one for thought: Conservatives go ahead with a minority government, and make their sole policy electoral reform. What party is going to be brave enough to oppose that in parliament when they know another election is around the corner? Another election for the Conservatives would currently be favourable; more so with a more PR based system.

So Lib Dem only got about 6-7% less votes than Labour yet have almost 5 times fewer seats.

Pathetic system, pathetic Labour for trying to cling on to power, misinformed voters for voting for them in the first place.

This is EXACTLY what bothers me about the system and why my vote is absolutly worthless (65%? Conservative majority).

People are serious that they think Cable could ever become chancellor? Haha, laughable.
Surely David Milliband will be the new labour leader in a few days?

Conservative 302 seats 10,592,258 votes
Labour 256 seats 8,509,376
Liberal Democrat 56 seats 6,751,786

I love the smell of democracy in the morning! Or even the afternoon.

I don't understand why labour would want to give away PR for a period of leadership 1-2 years before now and the next election.

You can see above how beneficial it was for them in the above post.
