Australia has been using PR since ~1918. Our last hung parliament from a federal election was in 1940. The 2007 election saw a 52% win by the Australian Labor Party.

Why don't you think the general population would support PR?

Because Australia has 2 main parties, not 3 like the UK. There would never be an overall majority with PR in the UK.

After watching some intervies of gen pop on the news I really have to wonder how many people fully understand how our politics system works and how the election system works. It came across like most of them only really half understood what was going on and what their vote meant. Needs sorting...
