To be fair, two in the last century isn't a massive sample to draw from. Also, what aspect of 1974 are you thinking off when you say 'utter failure'? Yes it ended in another election but it wasn't a disaster by any reasonable standard...
NZ politics are a joke though. They effectively have months of bickering and arguing afterwards why they try and form a government.

If this situation is showing one thing clearly, it is that in the event of us moving to PR, there will need to be laws ensuring that the most popular party gets to form a government, and a move to fix the term to prevent that being abused by any party.

I'm waiting for someone to tell these people that PR would mean the BNP is the fifth biggest party in parliament, even if they'd be tiny, they'd still be there. The BNP should go and join that protest, would soon shut them up.

If a a significant proportion of the population vote for the BNP, then the BNP should be represented as such in parliament. That's democracy. Either we have it full fat or we have the messed up system we've got now... or a dictatorship.

Indeed, but these left wing hippies that are protesting probably don't see things that way.

I'm still concerned over how PR would dictate who represents us on a local level. If my one vote gets jumbled into a job lot to produce a proportion of the MP's sitting in the house of commons, in what way have I ensured that my local interests will be conveyed in any way to the house?

That's why I support MMP/AMS rather than party list or STV. You still actually vote for constituency candidates.

PR in it's purest form doesn't dictate who represents you on a local level. In a PR system, you'd be voting for a party at the election, not a candidate. That's why changing to PR will take time, in order to implement it in the best way possible.

I want to see reform, but I just don't want it to go as far as the simple PR system these people seem to want.

Clegg on his way out to address the protesters.

Thats why a winning system were 'the most votes wins' could not work here...

If people like the BNP, UKIP or any other 'bad' party one...there would be national uproar...Even though they would have one fair and square

I love it. As it shows them how Clegg isn't "one of them" - they were duped.

I similarly love it as the only valid alternative to ConLib is a Tory minority rule.

So what are they protesting about!??! Morons. 65% of the electorate, to be fair, didn't vote for PR.

Your wrong.

Lib dems protesting as they voted for lib dems not the cons. 'YOU SERVE US'
they did not vote for a coalition.

I'd sooner the two parties worked out a coalition government for the good of the country. Electoral reform can be discussed over a longer period of time, but right now we need drastic action to start fixing the economy and the best ideas for doing that are Conservative ones.

Which is why we need to model our system on that of the Germans, where coalitions constantly keep these fringe parties in check and better represent the electorate.

1,000 people protesting for PR, well lets have a bit of PR and let the millions of people who aren't there have their wish to not have it :p

I don't think you can say, honestly, that everyone who voted Tory or Labour is opposed to PR.

Well you could, but you'd be daft.
