For me PR would be welcome if coalitions were not permitted, I would hate to see repeated governments made up of banded together loosers. In addition I think house of commons votes should should become 100% secret ballets, get rid of the whips and you would see stupid policies kicked into touch and good ones accepted freely by MP's without fear of repremand.

No I mean why is changing the British way of life necessarily a bad thing? It's quite clear to me that there's a huge split in society between Labour and Conservative supporters. All that seems to have been achieved since Thatcher is an even bigger split in society. Surely now at this time of national crisis it's time for a real third way, for politicians to work together to solve the issues caused by the global economic crisis?
 
I'd be for PR, but I'd also bring in a law change where like prisoners who aren't eligible to vote, I'd also withdraw the right to vote from people who have been on benefits for a certain period of time. Not all benefit claimants obviously, perhaps just the worst cases where people have not worked for years on end when they have been able to (i.e. not cases of disability etc.).

Labour **** the economy up every time they get in, and they get voted in by a certain core voter base. People who have no interest in succeeding, either themselves or their country.

Yup :(. This week could literally have us like Greece

I'm trying to remember the actual numbers but can't, but this is what I think they are..... IIRC the UK's debt interest is currently at 2% but if tomorrow morning nothing's sorted the markets are just going to get the willies and that'll put as at 4%, which'll need another £10bn borrowed just to cover the interest!

Because I don't want hung parliaments 100% of the time.

For instance:

  • Parties with the least amount of support end up wielding unproportionate amounts of power in coalition talks (SNP, Plaid)
  • The electorate ends up being marginalised by not being able to be sure that the winning party will be able to implement its manifesto elected upon in full
  • Politicians end up deciding amongst themselves who becomes the government in shabby backroom deals (whats happening now)

Now, I understand that FPP has its limitations and am sympathetic to the fact that vote share isn't reflected in seats, but I believe that a strong government is preferable to the above, especially given these unprecedented times when unpopular measures will need to be passed in parliament to sort out our public finances.

A strong government... The strongest form of government is a dictatorship. Also, with regards to your 2nd choice, Why should a majority (over 50% of the people) have to put up with the manifesto that they didn't vote for. Surely compromise over issues so that it's a mixture of policies in proportion to the share of the vote that the parties got would be better!
 
A fairer version of FPTP is what we really need, one that isn't skewed massively in favour of Labour.

The Scottish and Welsh nationalist parties can go and have independence for all I care, trying to hold us to ransom for their own selfish and short sighted concerns.

It's a ghastly truth that Labour, many Lib Dems, the SNP and Plaid would all happily screw over England for the sake of power/PR/other selfish interests.

I like the union, but lets stop the leeching off England eh.
 
I'm not arguing for a dictatorship though am I? I said FPP produces strong governments which I think is good, especially with the crisis we're currently in. I wouldn't wish a dictatorship on anybody, although an absolute monarchy might be a different story.. ;)

Too right! Thank goodness we have the Godly Conservatives to keep the other parties in check, and to show them what it means to be truly honourable.
