Cameron is fighting to hold the Conservative Party together

David Cameron is fighting to hold the Conservative Party together as anger about the party's disappointing performance at the polls mounts.

"What a mess," was the grim verdict of a Tory strategist last night as he tried to make sense of things. "It's the worst of all possible outcomes."

The senior MP was not alone in his view. Within a few hours of the messy election result, disaffected activists were already casting around for scapegoats.

David Cameron might have struck a dignified and authoritative tone of national unity, but among MPs and activists, all hell broke loose.

On grassroots forums on the internet, real trouble was brewing. Some openly discussed who might replace Mr Cameron if attempts at forming a government fell apart.

Others got to work dissecting the campaign. Steve Hilton, director of strategy, and Andy Coulson, director of communications, were blamed for getting the central message wrong.

How different the mood was compared to the "hope, optimism and change" that Mr Cameron had promised.

still everythings fine, nothing to see

They would not have to offer us anything, like free trade if they did not want to. Which was my point.

People assume free trade is on the table, when it isn't. At best it is a guess.

Anything that is theoretical is a guess. But I can't see a reason why they would be against it, it benefits everyone.

Seems spot on to me, I'd suggest a good number of people in this thread read it and understand it. It goes against the general tone from most of the guardian commentators.

Cameron looks tired and Nick looks sad. :p

They would offer us that as it would be in their interest to, given how France and Germany may well end up seeing the whole EU project as too costly once the PIGS bailout costs start to mount up

It doesn't benefit the EU, they lose one of their biggest net contributors, as well as the power we bring to the EU and the world stage.

it might be on the table, don't you think they should have some plan, before certain parties. Say it is deff and they would do it. Well actually it isn't down to you to do it, it is down to the EU to let us. So FFS don't say it is certain and you will do it if you were elected.

Clegg and his cronies are now holding the UK to ransom. Both he and Brown were the LOSERS in this election and he is waltzing round like a head of state or something.

I expect by Thursday Brown will be PM and Clegg to have a cabinet job.

Total disaster.

it's great when losers are winners:D

TBH the eurozone is a whole lot of trouble right now. That single currency is bringing down 5 countries slowly.

Being in Europe is letting all the other Europeans walk and take jobs. Do you think I like and enjoy walking down a high street full of Polish shops and signs all in Polish?

I support the leave EU. The Swiss don't seem to have a problem with that.

Are you for real?

aren't something like 70% of our exports sent to the eu.

So is Cameron unable to form a minority government ?

That will be the next step if he cannot get a deal with the Lib Dems and Labour cannot get a deal with the Lib Dems and every other party except the Green and the DUP.

So is Cameron unable to form a minority government ?

I imagine if the supposed Lab-Lib-SNP-PC coalition doesn't happen then he would be able to do so. No one in their right mind would shoot down his Queens Speech/Budget and force another election.

Of course, the Con-Lib coalition could happen.
