Well Cleggs lost seats and now he's Deputy PM

Its a retarded system and we need a General election

He *did* gain votes though *ducks* I voted Lib Dem, didn't expect them to win, but am glad that they're able to curtail some of the Tories' more outlandish policies, I'm also glad the tories are able to curtail some of our more ridiculous policies too!

BREAKING NEWS: Tory sources confirm that Nick Clegg will be deputy prime minister and that there are four other Lib Dem cabinet ministers.

Home Secretary
Education
Business
Transport

would be my guess.

People voted 'orange' under the impression that there would be a hung parliment where they actually had a say, and that they didn't join hands with the Tory's.

Clegg's screwed his votership and i'd be surprised if this wasn't the final nail in the coffin for his party.

Scotland are up in arms about it.

Its just plain bizarre that someone who ends up in 3rd place can become deputy leader. At least its decided. King maker indeed, but at what cost.

Yeah they might pay more tax if they weren't so skilled at exploiting tax loopholes.

Two mintues + Google will return a number of articles, even very recent ones, bemoaning the number of tax loopholes available to rich people to avoid paying the tax they should.

It's not just the very well off, theres plenty self employed people around fiddiling there returns, and indeed, there tax credits.

More people voted against them than for though.

Can you name a party where that isn't true? How about any party in the last 100 years? Hint: Last time that wasn't true was in 1906, or possibly 1911.

However, the Con-Lib coalition, Perhaps? Yup, they - combined - got a majority alright.

Paddy for secretary of state for defence is a brilliant appointment if true.

If that comes to pass, then I'd go with that. Ex-Marine that he is. Experience counts. Trident views included (I'm coming around to the view that a review might be reasonable - will it really achieve the aims for which it is intended?)

Sorry, someone posted above me he'd resigned his seat as well. I took it as gospel thinking they were in the know.

It was reported that he intended to resign as MP, then later that he hadn't.

Resign is a misnomer anyway - an MP can't resign. Instead, they use a "legal fiction" - namely appointment as "Crown Steward and Bailiff of the three Chiltern Hundreds of Stoke, Desborough and Burnham" and/or "Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead". Either appointment automatically disqualifies them as an MP.

Both Tony Blair and Betty Boothroyd used this method to 'escape' IIRC (the latter certainly did).

This is looking close to my perfect result, the two parties neutralising the excesses of the other, and giving the best for the country moving forward.

Looking forward to see how the ministries etc fall now, plenty of the rumours are looking promising :) Also looking for the full breakdown of agreed policies :)

Yup, I read all the party manifestos and liked some of the stuff the Lib Dems were proposing, but couldn't vote for them due to their immigration, power, defence and some taxation plans.

This is win-win for me.

Well in my view its fairytale politics with a doomed ending.

This.

I just hope we don't end up with extreme policies from both, as that is what they will want most. where middle ground policies they may well be compromise on.

Will have to wait and see how this unfolds.

I'm confused by all the people claiming that the Conservatives are going to save us "just like they did the last time".

From what I can gather, governments have inherited problems from the government preceding them all the way back to 1945 and beyond. All of which have dealt with those problems with varying degrees of success.

Most of the Tory Boys in here seem to suggest that every Conservative government has had to 'clean up' the mess left by the Labour government before them but I can't find any evidence of this.

If anything, most of the 'mess' was created by the Conservative or Labour government the time before that.

Maybe there's just a natural cycle of 10-15 years in which a government rides a wave of popularity before the population descends into disillusionment and kicks them out.

[/general rambling mode]

Either way, I came to the conclusion that a Con-Lib coalition was probably the best outcome for the country once it was clear we had a hung parliament with a Conservative majority and I'll stick by that. If only because at least we now have a decisive ruling government, even if it wasn't the government I voted for.
