New 5970 problem already

All this happens for about 10 mins, then everythings fine.

Ive got some issues with 5970 drivers too - hanging on start-up - the weird thing is after its been on a while doing a system repair or something it'll then start to work ok - around 10 minutes. No artifacts on the screen but same kinda time frame - first 10 minutes from cold start.

Methinks it's to do with the clockspeeds of the cards on boot. May be wrong though.

I wonder if this could be the problem?
Ive tried the various drivers up to 10.4a - no joy.
On boot-logging of drivers, the vga driver always fails to load - this the same with you guys?

Shall check this for you today mate, my machine recycles every startup but never bother checking event viewer for the problem..

You sure it's not your CPU? a lot of people with 5970's are running i7's at 4GHz with no problems.

Got my card back today from overclockers, they sent me an email saying they couldnt find anything wrong with the second card. They ran about 10 different benchmarks and tried various games etc.

Ive checked the temps of my cpu and graphics card and their pretty good.
I just dont get what could be causing the issue as its still happening.

Did anyone ask what psu you have? 5970 has a pretty hefty power draw.

less than 6 months old zalman 1000w.

Im not 100% sure but i think this problem of mine only happens on the desktop and browsing the internet. So i think its ok when im playing my games, so ill start playing something for a couple hours to test my theory.

Also im looking at the ati overdrive screen (havent overclocked my card yet) and at the bottom of it where it says the current values it has the following:
GPU Clock: 157Mhz
Memory Clock: 300Mhz

Is that right, shouldnt it be a lot higher could that be causing the problem?

I couldn't find the the thread / post, but I'm sure I have read about those cards having issues when in 2d but absolutely fine in 3d applications (where the clocks ramp up). I would think about increasing the clocks in 2d for greater stability, I reckon that is your problem.

i believe that too, so where do i find the 2d clocks and where do i overclock it too?

Have a look at this (about half way down).

Look for the highlighted red text with the proposed solution. Read thoroughly before attempting anything. I don't want to be responsible for knackering your card! :)

I would also wait to see if any other people respond just in case I have missed something. I'm sure some 5970 owners will drop by later. Good luck! :)

Im looking on rage3d site and they pretty much echoed what you said.

Well ive just overclocked the 2d settings to what the 3d settings are using amd gpu clock tool which is:
Gpu clock: 725Mhz
Memory Clock: 1005Mhz

Now fingers crossed ive sorted the problem.

Isn't that too high for 2d clocks? Watch the temps very carefully. It just seems you've jumped from a very low number to the other end of the scale.

My video card in 2d = core : 507 memory : 500. Then in game it climbs to 750 & 900 respectively.

Edit: just checked my temps and it used to be early 50s now its at 63c, what should i do?
