All this happens for about 10 mins, then everythings fine.
Methinks it's to do with the clockspeeds of the cards on boot. May be wrong though.
Ive got some issues with 5970 drivers too - hanging on start-up - the weird thing is after its been on a while doing a system repair or something it'll then start to work ok - around 10 minutes. No artifacts on the screen but same kinda time frame - first 10 minutes from cold start.
I wonder if this could be the problem?
Ive tried the various drivers up to 10.4a - no joy.
On boot-logging of drivers, the vga driver always fails to load - this the same with you guys?
Did anyone ask what psu you have? 5970 has a pretty hefty power draw.
I couldn't find the the thread / post but I'm sure I have read about those cards having issues when in 2d but absolutely fine in 3d applications (where the clocks ramp up). I would think about increasing the clocks in 2d for greater stability, I reckon that is your problem.
Have a look at this (about half way down).

Look for the highlighted red text with the proposed solution. Read thoroughly before attempting anything. I don't want to be responsible for knackering your card!![]()
I would also wait to see if any other people respond just in case I have missed something. I'm sure some 5970 owners will drop by later. Good luck!![]()
Isn't that too high for 2d clocks? Watch the temps very carefully. It just seems you've jumped from a very low number to the other end of the scale.
