Is there any way to test whether the flash works? It doesn't appear to work when I set it to go off when using the camera but I want to double check it before I take it back. There is a flashlight app which doesn't work as my phone isn't rooted.
Get "LED Desire Light" from the market, doesn't need root (nor do most of the other flashlight apps)
There are many apps on the market to allow LED flash to be used as a torch, check my sig link for one such app. You don't need root.
The flash works in the camera depending on metering since it's on Auto by default, simply take it off auto and set to on (no A next to the top right flash icon).
So my flash doesn't work at all
. There are two of us in the office with a Desire, and now we've both had to take them back for being faulty .
Mine does sometimes creek but I put a mini post it note on the battery so the cover doesn't press in any more - works fine!
My dad's desire however fits nice and tightly. Must have slightly higher moulding amounts around the edges or something.

Fantastic then! Only an extremely difficult to see pink tint (sort of) on the lowest brightness setting, and everything else works nicely.

Last thing I'm confused about (bearing in mind I had a Hero ages ago).
You can only wake the phone via the power button, that right? (Google suggests that is correct but I'd rather ask here too)

Even though I've only had mine two hours, I'd say you'd really have to be hammering the internet to get through 3GB
With a 3Gb FUP, there is absolutely no need to switch off any of the syncing stuff (battery issues aside).
Streaming media will be your only issue, as that can ramp up. 4 hours a day of streaming radio at 56k will use up your monthly 3 Gbs. Youtube, not so sure. Just set up the phone to use WiFi, and it'll choose 3G only if there is no AP.
