So what's the next "big thing" for tv then ... ?

Spartacus was awesome :D

There's a good series on at the moment here called Treme set in New Orleans by some of the guys that did The Wire - it's about the re-construction of NO post-Katrina and is very Wire-esque with multiple narratives going on.

Fringe is good fun too, Season 2 has just finished, very X-filesy and worth watching from the start.

True Blood is a good program too, just been renewed for a 3rd season.

Burn Notice has been set for like 6 seasons or something daft, it's a fun light-hearted proggie, worth a watch and it has Bruce Campbell in it :D

Basically stick to HBO and you can't go far wrong :p

true blood :D season 3 starts soon in america (even my mum watchs it lol)

spartacus blood and sand is good aswell they managed to make every episode better than the last so the show starts out a bit average and ends up with "an OMFG i cant believe it epic" ending to the first series.

the special effects are a bit "meh" but seems to get a lot better at the end

Yup! I ended up watching the last two episodes about 3 times each on consecutive nights as they were so epic!:D

It started on Bravo tonight for those interested in seeing it. It's like a mix of 300 and Gladiator on steroids.:p

Spartacus Blood and Sand is awesome.

Hopefully Andy Whitfield recovers soon so they can make a second series. The prequel will be interesting I think.

Broadwalk Empire looks like it could be very good as well so I'm looking forward to that. :)

On the police procedurals you forget the granddaddy and best: the original Law and Order, plus the various spin-offs (but not the awful UK one). Sadly L&O original has also just been cancelled after twenty series.

Stargate Universe has actually improved believe it or not. If you haven't seen any of the second half of season 1 then give it a look.
i agree with this the pilot was horrible for this series and i think put a lot of people off, but they def upped their game by the time episode 'space' came along - id agree with giving it another go.

as for other shows dunno but im happy dexter's coming back for another season especially considering how good the last one was, id also like damages to return for another,
im not really that bothered theres nothing new i still have 3 more seasons of the shield to catchup on! lol.

Sounds like Spartacus is worth looking into - I didn't think it would be all that good when I first read about it but will take a peek!

SG:U has definately improved in the 1.5 part of it's first season - and the 2nd is already filming and should (I presume) be airing again over here before the year is out!

An end of an era with Lost having wound up now - it's weird whenever I reach the end of a great series (like Lost) the first thing I have the urge to do is go back and start again!!

Spartacus was really good but I thought that the porn was unnecessary even if it was trying to portray the Roman times properly.
Other than shagging in every other scene though, awesome show, just not one to watch with the mrs - unless she's into that sort of thing!

Hehhe, my Mrs enjoyed Spartacus last night, which she is happy about as her current favourite tv show (The Pacific) is coming to an end shortly so she's happy that she has another show to move straight on to :)

NCIS, still good mindless police procedural fodder, unlike the NCIS:LA abortion that i survived for nearly 2 episodes before losing the will to live.

I'm really liking both NCIS right now, they are the highlight of the week together with House

Spartacus is also pretty good, shame that season 2 has been delayed indefinately

A Game of Thrones should be good, but with a couple of books still to be writen i'm worried about the wrap.

I'm really looking forward to A Game of Thrones - Got some excellent cast members attached, and it's HBO who rarely dissapoint.

Also holding high hopes for The Walking Dead.. A zombie apocalypse show being written & directed by Frank Darabont (The Shawshank Redemption, The Green Mile, The Mist).

Dude.

Porn is never unnecessary.

What's with all the crime investigation and health type shows around?

I admit to never watching them because they look boring but as i've gotten older i think my interests have varied more and am unsure if they're worth watching, still they seem as bad in number as reality tv and i hate that stuff so i just don't know, if they made one of those shows with a twist like dexter i might like them, otherwise i stick to stuff like lost, fringe, sgu or chuck, burn notice, reaper type stuff for the lighter entertainment, as for V it's something to watch but is lacking.

Just remembered Caprica was getting quite good, is that one coming back?

The thing is, the shows that get hyped to be the 'Next big thing' are usually the ones that turn out to be crap and get cancelled after one series, a good example being FlashForward, it wasn't crap but it wasn't the hit we were all expecting.

It's normally the stuff that comes out of left field that are the suprise 'hits', I don't think anyone expected anything of Lost at first, they did advertise it a lot but I don't think people were talking about it as the 'Next big thing' before it aired, it was a fluke in many ways, a 'once in a lifetime' type of thing, as Darlton have mentioned many times over the years.

Sorry but you're wrong, i remember clearly LOST being hyped up to the max, including a bizzare ad where all the main cast members are dressed up and waltzing around the plane wreckage looking space out and high

Another shout for Breaking Bad

Also, if you haven't seen

Arrested Development
Weeds
30 Rock
Entourage
West Wing

Since November last year I've seen all of

Dexter, The Wire, Breaking Bad, 30 Rock, Generation Kill, Band of Brothers and recommend them all!

Breaking Bad is definately one I would recommend.

If you enjoy Dexter, and haven't seen this I would recommend this in a heart beat. Similar dark comedy to Dexter. Very very good.

Season 3 has 3 episodes left, so when it's over I don't think there is anything else that catches my eye.

Waiting for:

Dexter (Season 5) - Can't wait to see where they will take this one.
Bones (Season 6) - Meh, my other half watches it, and it's ok, has it's moments
Supernatural (Season 6) - Can't really see where they can take this
Breaking Bad (apparently only going to run for 4 seasons)

Outnumbered - On going at the moment. Think there may only be another series or two left as I think the kids are aware of whats going on, so not as ad lib as it was. Still find it funny though.

Majority of which are all back in September.

Have a few films to watch until then so that should help fill the void.
