Apple is now bigger than Microsoft

Because the mac comes in a pretty box.

i have 2 x vista laptops and 1 x mac book pro

the mac book is good as the battery lasts forever, thats about the end of it, i find that most people buy them because they are more expensive and they can say in a condescending tone 'oive got a maaac dont you know' or correct you when you say pc they say no mac GRrrrr its just a computer i dont care who makes it, worse than ppl who say beemer instead of my car.

So really, what is the point?

What do you do on your Mac that you can't on Windows?

Nothing. That's not what I'm getting at. I don't think my Mac is more capable than a Windows machine, and I don't suppose that it ever will be.

It's just that it's less of a pain in the arse. You forget that we on this board, we're techy people. We're not fazed by having to tinker with things to make them work, it doesn't present us a problem.

But most people will **** their pants the moment something doesn't work without any user input, and the Mac is a lot better at providing an environment where that doesn't happen.

I'm not a brainwashed fanboy, of course all systems have their pros and cons, but I haven't used a Windows machine for my own needs in literally years. Macs have been at the point where they can stand on their own two feet and be your ONLY computer for years. That was my main beef before - I didn't feel like I could own just one Mac and do everything I wanted to do. It's not like that anymore. I use Macs for EVERYTHING that I do, and I collaborate with Mac and Windows users alike without problem.

Yes they're more expensive, and if you don't want to spend the money then that is a perfectly valid reason - your Windows machine is no doubt very capable.

But ask yourself how many people, computer literate or not, who, when they switch on their machine, will immediately start making excuses for how crap it it? It's half of them at least, right?

Well I've been using Solaris, AIX, Sequent Dynix for years at work so it helps if I run a similar OS at home. I actually have Solaris 10 running under a VMserver on my home Red Hat Linux Server.

I do have a PC at home with Windows on it, I use it for Minesweeper, you can't beat the original.

lies I've got my dad using windows 7 and despite years of trying to train him i still can't get him to use more than two fingers to type :p

The newer windows are pretty easy tbh.

Most of it's faults/failures come from letting people fiddle excursively or 3rd party drivers, something which macs don't really have to worry about.

Don't think I've ever had a bosd not caused by 3rd party drivers or faulty hardware.

Why pay more for lesser hardware and having to buy an MS os anyway in the end?

You're too stuck at looking at numbers on paper. I don't have any MS operating systems installed on any machine besides my 360, and I haven't had in years. I have never come unstuck. I've never thought ****, I wish I had a Windows machine.

I really do think that if you really got stuck in with a Mac, you'd see what I meant. I also know that you probably never will, and you'll continue searching for negatives.

But honestly - if you could just try it, properly, you'd see. It's just... nice. It's warm and fuzzy and easy. It's pleasant.

I'm not living in a little dream land either, I know the Mac's faults only too well having to fix them when they go wrong or explain things that are just plain old arse backwards, there are things about the Mac and other Apple hardware that drive me absolutely spare. It's just that I've spent several years with both, and I made my choice. Windows, Mac, and Unix are all perfectly valid choices, it's just that I find people who use Windows seem to be less accepting of the others than Unix and Mac users.

This is all just my opinion.

TBH, I've found through friends and family that most people handle most problems in Windows just fine. Most people aren't as stupid with computers as some people on forums like these like to make out.

I'd actually argue that Windows is easier for computer illiterate because they're better able to relate and ask for help off their friends, family, whoever, because more people are familiar with Windows than OS X.

At this moment in time, there is no reason for Macs to exist. They are purely fashion accessories. So long as people don't try and claim that isn't the truth, I'm fine with it, but too many Mac fanboys rave around the net and IRL claiming superiority and looking to get headbutted.

And then blame Windows, not the fact that they bought a crappy £300 laptop that's slow out of the box.

All but one of my friends at Uni have a Windows laptop. None of them are computer techy at all, and all get by fine. My friend that I borrowed the Macbook Pro from has got a new one now, and he's almost always booted into Windows 7 to play games. He's a web developer but I still don't see the need for it.

Also, on the Apple store;

One 2.66GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon "Nehalem" processor
3GB (three 1GB) memory
640GB hard drive 1
18x double-layer SuperDrive
NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 with 512MB

£1,940.00

I built my Q6600 rig almost two years ago now, for a fraction of that price, and it's faster :/

edit: Also I whilst I was using my friends older Macbook Pro over Christmas, it promptly died and wont turn back on now. We think it's stuck in sleep so we're going to try and set it up as a firewire drive and boot into it from the other mac. I don't think many Mac users would think to do this, and just take it into the shop tbh

I've used mac,s tbh there's not much difference for basic stuff but they're more expensive, have lower specs, less customisable and can't do what i need/want them to.

So they fail on all points for me.

That and I hate the design. :p

I like a more industrial looks rather than curvy lines :D

But tbh that's a minor issue :)

I'm not a Mac fanboy but I think this post some's up the Microsoft crowd. "headbutted".

ffs Bill Gates has retired, he knows his software is ****. Microsoft is going to go the same way as any rubbish company that had a pot of gold in their hand and dropped it.

If you disagree, invest in Microsoft, put you hard earned cash into them, go on do it and let us know how you have get on in the next few years.

Listen to yourself, honestly. You sound like a fanny.

There are entire industries that would fall down around themselves if Mac OS didn't and had never existed.

Sure for some people it's fashion, but do you think the entire print industry uses them because they're fashionable? Do you think there are hundreds of thousands of pre-press workers around the globe in windowless rooms hammering out 95% of the printed matter you consume, on Macs, because of fashion? Or because they're better for the job?

Also, you're fine with Macs as long as people don't try and say they're anything but fashion accessories? Headbutt?

Enjoy your nerd rage, geekypants.

I think i could get a tripple 22" eyefinity set up + pc that could handle it for that money :p

But yours doesn't have a shiney apple logo on it...

Out of the two, my money is on Google :D
This company will easily be the dominant force in 10 years above both Apple & MS.

It's certainly going to be interesting seeing where google go.

I wonder if they'll stick with mostly software or branch out to more customized hardware (hand held stuff i mean rather than trying to enter the chip market).

Some of their AR stuff would be sweet with a set of glasses :D

IMO this isn't really comparing apples and apples (like what I did there :p). Apple don't just sell software, support and consultancy like Microsoft, they sell hardware in which they make a tonne of cash on as well as phones etc (in fact MS may sell phones I'm not sure).

Still, fair play to apple, they are doing very well and it certainly was a good read on a slow news day.

Google needs cloud computing to take off, I suspect it's still 3 years away but when it does, PS3, 360, Windows, etc will fade away.

Google has the ball in her hand at the moment, but she hasn't got a firm grip on it by a long shot.
