*** The Official HTC Desire (Bravo) Thread! ***

I get the feeling my HTC Desire is a bit sluggish... more than it should be, although I have nothing to compare it to...

I'm looking at it with the 'systempanel' app, only 2 apps active that aren't the standard HTC apps and the phone has just been switched on. Memory is usage at 54% while CPU is moving from about 8% to 20% when idle and jumping to around 40 when I scroll around. I can't see any individual processes that appear to be taking up huge amounts of memory (or any more than others). opening a couple of more applications and the memory goes to 62% and moving through menus starts to feel more sluggish

am I just being overly critical? is this normal?

Well I'm rooting this evening for sure now using the Modaco guide. CBA waiting any longer for a 2.2 rom so will play with custom status bars, battery % and so on.

I'm just confused how it says on Modaco under the r5 sticky -

The root process will NOT...

* enable you to flash your device with a custom recovery image that can be launched easily by just holding down the volume down button when powering on
* enable you to have write access to the /system partition in normal use of the device

Doesn't that top point mean you can't flash custom ROMs onto it, or are recovery images different things? (I assume they are) :p

Wouldn't see much point in it otherwise other than for the SuperUser access!

Are you using a live wallpaper? I found they slowed the system down quite a bit on mine.

I am !

I'll give it a go without it

I really liked the live wallpaper too :'(

wow! yes instantly it became so much more responsive

I suppose its no real loss. I've just switched to a version where the bubbles don't move around
shame though, that Its a standard feature of the phone that slows it down rather than something made by a 3rd party

thanks for the tip scottland

You are better off without a Live Wallpaper for the time being (and it probably cant be improved), it gimps the speed a bit, and the battery life :(

Recovery images are different, think of them like the BIOS on your PC in relation to the OS. The default one will not let you do anything at all, the custom one gives you a menu and allows you (amongst other things) to pick and update.zip file to update the ROM on the device.

What you can't do with the current desire root method is keep a custom recovery image on the device, you have to put the phone into normal recovery mode, then use a script to push the custom one to the device and run it.

You only need a gold card if the device is carrier branded (Orange, T-Mobile et al).
If you're not going to be using A2SD, you can leave your SD as is, but put the ROM update zip on there first. If you're going to be using A2SD then you should backup the contents of the SD onto your PC as you'll be needing to format and re-partition the SD and the contents will be lost.

I just tried using Pauls method to root and it wouldn't complete transferring via the .bat files, just failed to transfer the large file over.

It then turned off and on and presented a black screen with a red warning triangle in...

I then (worried) had to take the battery out to get it to turn off.

But then it turned on fine and is exactly as I had it before, so the .bat can't have done anything to it before it failed.

Thank god :p I think I'll wait and try again properly when Froyo is stable, if HTC haven't updated it by then!

Good luck Khaaan! ;)

the guide u posted says u need to make a goldcard when on 0.75 where above your post pople have said u dont need too. clarification please? :)

btw im on 0.75 and want to roooooot

I just tried (as above) using Pauls guide from Modaco on Windows 7 x64 (and I think that's where the problem I had comes from).

You need a gold card if you have a phone from Orange/Tmobile etc, regardless of the 0.75. If not, you dont.

gotta wait ~15mins to finish downloading the files. hit my limit on VM 2day so am capped at ultraslow kb/s :(

So are there any better deals around than the orange £25/24months with 12 months half price ?

Im soo tempted to order but dont want to be taken for a ride.
