*** The Official HTC Desire (Bravo) Thread! ***

Can someone tell me (a mobile phone nublet) what rooting the phone is? Why is it called that? Is it the same as a jailbreak/unlock? Basically flashing the OS/Rom?

Also, can someone tell me if it is true that you cannot define a proxy with the Desire? I've read of poeple having issues linking up to work networks as you can't specify one.

I've gone back to the rootedupdate.zip version, the DeFrost 0.4 was giving me battery problems, as well as all the other faults, camera/charge led etc.

Basically, Rooting is making yourself 'Superuser', allowing full permissions.

Hence the name root. I see. Give me an example...is it restricted as to what you can do without rooting then?

What Does Root Give Me?

1.Full control over your system

2.Ability to alter system files. You can replace many parts of the "Android Core" with this including:
Themes
Core apps (maps, calendar, clock etc)
Recovery image
Bootloader
Toolbox (linux binary that lets you execute simple linux commands like "ls") can be replaced with Busybox (slightly better option)
Boot images
Add linux binaries

3.Run special apps that need more control over the system
SuperUser (lets you approve or deny the use of root access to any program)
Task Manager For Root (Lets you kill apps that you otherwise could not kill)
Tether apps (like the one found at [android-wifi-tether.googlecode.com])
<there are more but I cannot think of any right now>

4.Backup your system
You can make a folder on your sdcard and backup all of your .apk files to your sdcard (helps if an author decides to "upgrade" you to a version that requires you to pay to use the version you just had)

5.Relocate your (browser/maps/market) cache to your /sdcard

6.Relocate your installed applications to your /sdcard

7.Reboot your phone from the terminal app easily (su <enter> reboot <enter>)

What Do I Lose Having Root

1.The ability to accept OTA updates (well, you can but you would lose root, so its been made so they get denied)

2.The sense that someone else controls your phone

3.The need to sit in an Android chat channel asking how to get root

4.The need for a stupid useless "File Manager" that lets you see filenames but almost nothing else.

5.The ability to have a knowledgeable conversation with a T-Mobile rep about your phone. (Ask one of them to spell root for you)

Hmmm it seems you don't need to wipe once you've flashed defrost and are merely updating to the newest version.

Think I'll do it all tonight then and then just flash the fixed one once the bugs are gone......Hmmm still thinking!

I'll give HTC / Vodafone until the end of July for an official FroYo before I consider flashing a custom ROM. Having said that i've not even had this minor update that came out a week or so ago yet!!

I've gone back to the rootedupdate.zip version, the DeFrost 0.4 was giving me battery problems, as well as all the other faults, camera/charge led etc.

What version is that, the stock rooted rom?

Looking around, doesn't seem to be any rom fully working as of yet apart from modaco's custom rom.

Have just created gold card, rooted/debranded my Desire without managing to brick it, no idea what I'm going to do with root permissions though.

Not putting Froyo on until it's complete and all the bugs are worked out.

Have you got the links to each process handy? :)

Might do the same but hold off until the same time

Is it possible to get a free Desire on T Mobile for £25 a month? My fiancee is after one now she's leaving 3.

Mobilephonesdirect will have something like that.

Yes, the camera quick fix is to disable it's auto focus.

You can sort the LED problem by rebooting the phone once you've charged it, although I agree that's hassle :p Mine actually worked properly once I'd done that, didn't have the issue again!

Automatic Brightness doesn't work with the light sensor, so you are best off setting the minimum you can put up with for the time being.

It's worth noting, the Froyo that is running on N1's currently and on your Desire, is not the finished version, Google may well release the entire thing with the source code very soon, that's when Paul@Modaco is going to sort it out, and these little bugs should go away. :D

However, the guys at XDA may well get most of the stuff fixed in the next few days anyway ;)
