Currently having an enjoyable time with Yumi-chan and Sachiko-sama working my way through their first three series before the DVD release of season 4 at the beginning of July. Currently half way through season 2 and loving watching it again picking up the little bits I'd forgotten from the episodes which aren't my favourites.

Thinking something lighter and more comical next (possibly a re-watch of School Rumble but I haven't really decided yet)

I actually quite like the original cover art on this one, if you look closely at the drawing you can see the artist gave her an extra set of canines, to illustrate shes got a slightly more wolfy set of chompers than a normal girl, as mentioned a few times in the book, which is a nice little bit of attention to detail, and the sort of thing that often gets missed out.

In the anime as well it shows her canines quite a lot, like in the first episode.

What I meant by the cover artwork is it actually shows her having two sets of canines, which I thought was a nice way of representing it without going OTT.

Hahah Im not sure if the first episode counts as representative either as it kinda rubbed in the fact shes not human with the tail, eye colour, teeth and howl all at once as your first introduction :D, but you're right the anime does make sure to add her canines a lot, especially when she's smiling. Trick is, I've seen quite a few shows recently where they seem to draw in canines more obviously on characters out of rote almost, even when they're completely human, which is why, at least to me, it doesnt seem to stand out so much anymore (well, if you exclude S1 ep6 when she reverts to her wolf form, and you get the view of her teeth changing to fangs during the transformation), and was why I thought the cover's way of depicting it was a nice way of staying faithful to the description :)

I wasn't completely talking about S&W when I made the "nice little bit of attention to detail, and the sort of thing that often gets missed out" comment either, I've seen it before on loads of stuff where depictions of characters will miss little details out :)

Just started watching Claymore. You can tell its an upscale, but it really does look pretty decent (shame its 1080i not 1080p), and its very fluid, more so than some other shows I've seen. Can't complain on the picture quality considering it cost me almost the same as the DVD.
The DTHD 5.1 english track also sounds really good compared to the 2 channel Japanese track, very clear and nice use of the rears, but unfortunately the main guys voice really put me off in English so I swapped to the 2.0 DD Japanese audio.

Liking the style though, it really does remind me of The Witcher an awful lot in terms of it's style, backstory, what the chatacters do to the point I wonder if there was any common influence in the conception etc.

Watched the first disc this afternoon, hoping to finish the second 2 in the next few days. Presentation and box set are reasonably nice though.

Re-watched Please Teacher! and Please Twins! this weekend, thoughts as follows:

Please Teacher! is a nice series, ok it's not exactly ground breaking in any way shape but it has nice characters and the and an engaging story. The series is quite amusing in places and has some minor fanservice but nothing that gets in the way of the story. I like this series and the main female characters mother can come and see me any time :). Apparently the series is set in the Nagano/Matsumoto region of Japan and having travelled through that area I'd say that yes that's pretty much what it's like around there. The school is based on one in Matsumoto which is now a museum ... if I'd known that I might well have gone and taken a look :)

Please Twins! is set in the same area as Please Teacher approximately 1-2 years afterwards. The main characters are three high school children who have all been abandoned and may, or may not be related. These characters are new but the majority of the supporting cast are from the previous series. I found that this series, overall, was not as good as the first series. Some of the parts, mostly with the original cast, were very funny but the main plot was pretty weak, (e.g. it took far to long for them to realise something important about the important photograph ... something which is immediately obvious). The big problem with the series though is the fanservice. It's not relevant to the plot and it adds nothing. If there is a chance for the female characters to have a conversation then it happens in the bath, this may have been ok once or twice but instead it happens almost that number of times per episode.

Overall I'd say watch Please Teacher! ... skip Please Twins!

Your view on the ending of please twins mate?
Did it seem to you to be hinting at a sequel ova or series?Been too long now i guess though :)

Also been watching oldies too myself,Princess Nine...The quality of the animé from way back when is dire when compared to the video available now
Like the story though, again i was hoping for a sequel to continue the story but not likely to happen i dought

I thought that the ending was pretty conclusive really (for an anime) ... main plot was answered and things seemed to have reached a steady state.

I'll have to re-watch Princess Nine too at some point .... seem to remember that whilst the animation was a bit dated the story was reasonable.

Finished my other current re-watch this evening .... the AoDVD thread following the series one episode a day was a bit slow for me as I've just completed the first three seasons of Maria-sama Ga Miteru in 6 evenings. That's season 1 (~13 episodes), season 2 (~13 episodes) and season 3 (5x 50min OVAs).

I have to admit it is one of my favourite all time animes. It is a rarity in that it is a girls school based series with no fanservice (at all ... even the uniforms are modest, and no onsen scene (although two characters go to one the fact that they are going is the only reference to it)). The stories are all about the characters and the relationships between them. There are hints of yuri-ness between some of the characters but overall it's not that type of show (even though it could have easily been so). Yes the story can be a bit melodramatic at times and some of the plot arcs can be rather intense (I'm think the last arc of season 2 for example) but that all adds to it's charm.

TRSI/Nozomi's release is very nice and rare in that it offers two subtitle tracks. One of these is what we would consider a normal subtitle track and the other maintains the Japanese honorifics .... I much prefer the latter as they are very important in the series to understand the nature of the relationships between the characters.

Roll on the release of season 4 on 6th July ... I have my pre-order in ;)

Next up I have started re-watching season 1 of School Rumble ...

re-watching season 1 of School Rumble

Oddly enough I was considering that as my next series, as I'm almost through Claymore now (slow weekend), I've heard its quite funny, but not entirely sure what to expect as I'd heard the same about Gurren Lagaan (which I wasn't that keen on).

Hopefully I'll like it as I've season 2 sitting there as well :)

Indeed. It's the comedy relationships between classmates, rivalries with other classes, and just the thought of how fun it would be if your own highschool life was as crazy as this. Hell some of the characters may as well be over-the-top representations of those of your real life mates you used to go to school with. Then there is also some hilarious parodies in there.

I find it one of those series which you need to switch your brain off for ... it's not deep, it's not clever ... but (at times) it is rather funny. The main character always strikes me as a slightly more energetic version of Osaka from Azumanga Daioh ... :)

edit: It is being reported that Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya Season 2 is going to be released as a single collection by Bandai US in August (17/08) ... although currently this is just an Amazon US listing instead of an official solicitation. So given the normal Bandai slippages that'll be September/October then ;)
