Simplicity for iPhone starts at £20. No idea why it should be any different to the normal Simplicity plans but there you go.

I'm putting my 32GB 3GS on eBay. I requested with O2 that it be unlocked and they sent me the text saying 'just put a new sim card in and sync with iTunes.'
Does that mean I can reset it to factory settings and whoever buys it off eBay will be able to use their sim in it, or do I need to personally unlock it?

Cheers

It's odd how the prices have gone up since the release of the 3G, even accounting for inflation. You'd expect the growth of other smartphones and the maturing technology would bring prices down.

Oh well. As one of the O2 customers who asked for the Simplicity 20 tariff before it was formally announced and got the 1 month contract at the 12 month prices, I'm just going to buy the sim-free phone directly from Apple. It works out about £40 more expensive over the course of 24 months than a new contract but at least I'll have some flexibility.

Do it yourself, it's no bother. Find a sim from another network, stick it in and sync your iPhone with the computer. It will then be unlocked and you can put the O2 sim back in.

I am going to get the iPhone 4 32gb on o2 on the £40 p/m contract. Then after 9 months move down to the £35 contract. Short of buying a SIM free I think this is the cheapest way to do it.

No the Apple pricing strategy is based around premium product - low volume, high price.

This means in times that people start looking at downward pressure you increase the price. As long as it's desirable then people people will treat it like a Porsche for example.

The others have the fun of having to carve enough share out of the market, which given the current competition is going to cost a load, but also have the content and functionality to deliver what the users want - phone users no longer want technology without a purpose. The value to the user is based around what the technology allows them todo, more of a service..

I'd break the mobile space into two:
* calls and texts - low cost option
* smart phone - med-high cost.

Now is the cost worth the value you place on sorting things out quickly/smoothly by the apps you can get? If not - there's the low cost option.

When the hell are we gonna be able to order/pre-order from providers (for me, O2) Are we expected to wait right up until the 24th release date :(

Well, if they don't let me pre-order one on O2 I'll leave it until I can just walk in to a shop and grab one there and then.
I'm not queueing at 6am.

I think due to the overwhelming amount of preorders on the apple store its prevented any chance of a preorder from a network provider. I believe o2 and carphone warehouse were set on doing preorders originally. Apple has to prioritise their own orders so it seems the networks are taking a back seat for now. Shame as i really wanted to order from o2.

I reckon they'll start taking orders on the 24th as you say and even then it will be dependent on availability.

Except that the volumes are high when it comes to the iPhone...

True, so they have the option to price high compared to similar options or raise the price further..

Oddly there are still a ridiculous number of normal phones out there though. I terms of new sales iPhone has a large share but the number of non-smart phones is still high globally.

Agreed, I reckon it was going to happen as it was on emails etc, but due to demand, Apple are cutiing out the middle man and directly slinging as many out of the door as possible, and telling the networks that it's tough **** until they can cater for them.

Nothing the networks can do as its the same captive market as it always was, no-one is going to tell Apple to go **** themselves and they wouldnt care anyway as they'd get the sales through the other networks.

Meanwhile, it'll be suicide central at Shenzhen, as Apple/Foxconn try to triple production.

Added Vodafone's leaked prices to the sheet

Are these the figures leaked ages ago?

I'm not overly convinced with these - looks like it was a staging server and I'd consider it highly likely they used sample data (in this case from a previous iphone release) and then update the pricing when it is finalised.

Just seems to significantly undercut O2 and I can't see that happening in reality.
