Being a Leeds fan and watching League 1 sides outbattle us on a few occasions I can equate it to the England set-up. The Algerians aren't there expecting to win anything, but will have celebrated drawing with THE FAMOUS THREE LIONS OF ENGLAND! like it was a victory. Teams like that view every game as their cup final, and they fight their way through them, you have to earn the right to play football before you can start a quick passing game like England want to. They have to battle and work hard as well as trying the pretty bits. Lennon's rubbish attempts at inside flicks, for example. You're there to run at defenders Aaron, that's what got you your place in the squad. Why are you now scared of it?

That is still completely Capello's fault, completely, firstly he picked all the same combo's that have previously not worked, thats bad management.

thats excuse making

we do this every tournament

blame the manager, get a new one in, and then they go and play terrible again. We've had a team "full of talented players" that "underperfoms" for 20 years or so now.

30 years of hurt has now become 44 years of hurt.

How much longer must we go on blaming the manager ?

There was a good comment by one of the commentators afterwards who said England "looked haunted" in the shirt which I thought was very accurate.

like gilly says the players look scared to try something.

well dont say that i didnt warn people that not trying out a plan B without rooney in the pre friendlies would be a mistake.

its not just rooney, there were shocking performances all over that team last night. We couldnt even pass the ball around properly and thats just basic stuff.

I've just watched the England rugby union team beat Australia 21-20.

What a pleasure to watch an England team that plays together with pride and commitment, unlike our underachieving football primadonnas.

They're supposed to be professional football players (they are paid enough) - why should they be scared to try things?

Because they are coached not to? Think about Italian football, it is very slow regimented it is almost like football by numbers.

Look at Maradona and Argentina, he is a poor coach but the players want to play for him, he invokes passion, Brazil they play with a freedom that other teams don't.

Cappello has his way of doing things, unfortunately it appears that it is not an adaptable method.

Well done to England:)...good result for them..about time one english team won :p

All those people comparing Rooney to Messi LOL, Messi is a million times better player that Rooney is you can't even name them in the same breath.
Rooney is a fat over paid over hyped, POS English player who only looks good at Manchester united because of the wealth of foreign players around him.

I totally agree with this. Rooney is nothing without world class foriegn players around him.

Quite a poor performance but this whole reaction sticking the knife in afterwards is hardly going to help. I don't see the point in booing the players as its not going to inspire them to play better, its just going to compound their misery and make it harder to turn things around.

All this abuse for Rooney now is quite pathetic. If I was him I'd just say "you know what, **** you then." Announce my retirement from the international game and lap it up when all the morons declaring how crap he is now after a couple of bad games suddenly realise just what an important player he is.
