Possibly stupid question: is there any particular reason I need to be specifically on an 'iPhone tariff'?

I.e. I've been told by Orange that Apple have dictated that even contract renewals cannot carry any loyalty bonuses if I intend on upgrading to an iPhone- I have a pretty good deal at the moment, can I just renew it with any other random phone, but buy a sim-free iPhone and put my sim into that?

You could do.

Trouble is, what the networks seem to be keeping quiet about right now is Micro-Sims which you need for the iPhone 4. I already read that somebody had said Orange were not going to issue Micro-Sims unless you switched to an iPhone contract.

So until then, it's probably hard to know, also as exactly to what the legality of you having a contract with a provider is, and needing a sim card for whatever phone you have, even if there is a charge for a replacement sim.

As others have pointed out, it is possible to try and cut your sim card to make it smaller though.

Somebody might have to confirm it, but I think possibly you don't get Visual Voicemail without an iPhone contract?

I ask the other day what happens if you go over you orange 750mb of data and later found this on the orange site

Inclusive Mobile Internet - Mobile internet browsing applies within the UK only. Any use outside the UK will be charged at the relevant international rates. Mobile Internet browsing does not include event charges such as for ringtones or games (transport costs for these events are included). Fair Usage policy of 750MB applies. Not to be used for Internet Tethering (e.g. using your handset as a modem - separate Tethered Data bundles are available). Should you exceed this limit or if such use is detected, notice may be given and Network protection controls applied to ensure the quality and availability of our network to all customers. This may result in, at Orange's discretion, reduced speed of transmission, suspension of mobile internet browsing services and/or suspension of your account.

Inclusive WiFi - use of BT Openzone hotspots in the UK only . Fair Usage policy of 750MB applies . Usage above 750MB per month may result in suspension of Wifi services and/or suspension of your account. The 750MB Fair Usage Policy does not apply when using your iPhone on domestic WiFi. Note however that some domestic broadband packages have download limits and customers should be aware that using the iPhone to access the web through domestic WiFi will contribute to domestic data usage

I take it if you don't live near an apple store the only choice you have is rocking up at an o2 store Thursday 9am?

I'm moving from
iPhone simplicity to iPhone subsidy plan

Half an hour on the phone with Orange to get the MicroSIM. First they tell me any microSIM won't work with the iPhone unless I pay an extra tenner a month for the iPhone plan (on top of my Blackberry plan as they can't take the blackberry bit off). Yeah like I'm going to pay 500 for the phone and then 45 a month.

Then they finally concede it'll probably be fine using my existing data plan but now their system can't let them send a microSIM until Thursday. The whole thing is so badly organised it's unreal!!

If my phone turns up on the 24th (and right now my order still says deliver on 24th), I'll get the scissors out. If Apple bugger me about and it doesn't come on the 24th, I'll sack the whole thing off and get a second hand Nexus One (now my HTC Desire is gone I really miss Android!).

Surely this is not right. Are they implying that any micro sim needs to be 'activated' for iPhone in some way? Further to my earlier query, is there any condition which a network can dictate that you must use the sim they provide in a specific handset? Surely they can't block a sim card from working in an iPhone just because it's not on an 'iPhone plan'

Vodafone and micro-sims for iphone4

Hi,

Well I expected Vodafone might try and kick up a fuss or at least try and charge me £20 for the iphone4 micro-sim card however I called them up, told them I am ordering an iphone4 from apple direct and that I wanted a micro-sim. They said 'okay fine - it will be with you on the 22nd of June - anything else I can help with?' so that was more trouble free than I expected!

Sam

nice, that will do me for now but I doubt they had an actual Iphone to get to measure out the correct dimensions etc.

I don't mind it naked at home, its when I take it out with me.

I dunno about the sizing, these were presumably manufactured in china and I wonder if the designers of these things managed to lay hands on a prototype or proper measurements from someone in the know at FoxConn or something. I doubt they're authorised by Apple so must have got their dimensions from elsewhere. I'll let you all know if it fits on Thursday :)

Anyone who pre-ordered a sim-free iPhone direct from Apple got a shipping notification yet? Apparently some people in the US of A have started getting there's. Might be lucky enough to get an early delivery!

Bah.. I just rang my local O2 shop, and they won't do the upgrade till actual day of launch.

I must say this is rather stressful. If they have priority for current o2 customers why can't they let us order on-line. I might just get a cheap £6.00 phone and manage on that for a month or so till all this silly hype dies down.
