*** The all new iPhone 4 thread - Keep all iPhone 4 stuff in here ***

Heres a link to gizmodo with multiple vids confirming the reception issue. Amazing....

Yeah I looked at that one earlier.

It does seem quite prevalent and I'm still having a hard time believing Apple's engineers would let such a thing slip through the net!

I cant believe some people are actually saying its 'fine' because you can buy a bumper case to help.....

Another one to add to the list! :/

I find it even funnier some people think it's a software problem

Their external prototypes though had that casing around them which may have stopped the signal degrading (noo direct contact with the strips). A few people are saying its something to do with bridging the side metal strip to the one at the bottom. Also noticed a few people mention that on the phone apple were pushing hard to get people to buy the bumpers.

Simply amazing something this obvious got through any type of testing seeing as making a call seems to make it happen, assuming you're not holding the phone in a weird way.

Right, I've watched the videos posted on Gizmodo.

Either side of the phone are two lines which seperate the metal. When you touch the above part of the line and another part of your hand/body touches the other lower part of the line, the signal drops significantly.
Reader Erik confirms what FameFoundry found, which is, if you don't touch the bottom of the phone, you're fine. But as soon as you connect the left side with the bottom, that's when reception starts to drop.

What an absolute joke that is to be honest, I do hope it is a software problem but I highly doubt it.

Will be interesting to see if the issue can be replicated outside of the AT&T network, but I imagine it can.

Im wondering what the fix for this will be. If apple are going to have to give everyone free bumpers or the slim possibility of a recall. As you say its very doubtful its a software problem, and if not then it seems someone at apple ****** up big time.

This does sound very disappointing yet another major phone release marred by issues

Further tests would appear to show this signal problem exists across the board on the iPhone 4.

Apple have said something jittery along the lines of 'its probably a software fault', but I cant really see how that is possible.

So basically, if you touch the top/middle of the phone with the bottom (connected by your hand/skin), your signal goes to hell. Pretty much the default position when using it.

How did this get through testing? Blimey.

I dont think they would get away with giving everyone free bumpers, lots of people dont like using cases and things like that.

I certainly wouldn't deem any flaw like this acceptable having just spent £600 or signed up to a £1000+ 2 year deal and so on.

Still, a very interesting day ahead as only a small handful of people have the phones compared to how many will in the next 24 hours.

A recall would be a disaster for Apples good name when it comes to well built products, one thing it has over HTC at the moment in certain ways, and part of the reason its things are so expensive.

Well will certainly be interesting reading throughout the day to see if this is a widespread problem

A person in this thread is saying even with a case on isolating the phone from the hand its not having any effect in stopping the bars dropping.

Also someone predicted this would happen before the thing was released, a danish professor at this link:

:eek::eek:

Ah, that is interesting. I hope it is something quite simple that can be sorted with minimum fuss!

To be honest we shouldn't read into any testing too much just yet, as its only the yanks doing it at the moment and well, you know what they are like ;)

i just confirmed the bar issue on my 3G w/ iOS4.

TBH, I've been running that over two weeks now and not had any issues so I'm not worried.

(Well, apart from that the whole OS is slow as hell on the 3G)
