*** The all new iPhone 4 thread - Keep all iPhone 4 stuff in here ***

So I went to my local O2 shop today to have a play about.

Took out the old 3G and compared the screen. Mental. Text when fully zoomed out of a page is perfectly legible. Shame they didn't have iBooks installed to properly test out text though.

I wasn't bowled over with the speed. It's as fast as a multitasking phone should be. By default speed is aways increased with these phones so that alone isn't a selling point. Much like how I never bothered to get a 3GS.

Would be nice to own a camera capable of taking video though, never mind 720p. :p

From a 3G to an iphone 4, there is a massive difference. Hopefully my sim swap will be done in the next few mins, my mate cut down a normal PAYG sim and it works so I have transferred my number over to that. :)

Just need to test the reception out which I hope is good, because I sure as hell don't want a bumper on it.

I picked up my mates iphone 4 and he is getting it off me at the weekend. He has given me permission to test it etc. I have a 3gs and want to put some of my apps on it. Can i just log in with my itunes account and download them onto the phone via wifi? Will it mess anything up on mine.

I will do a full erase after testing.

Got my iPhone with the bumper before news about the reception came about, more to protect it from drops shattering the glass then anything else.

Had reservations about the bumper from the Keynote, looked like a fat rubber band around the phone. But after putting it on it looks oh so sleek in a different, more robust way, as it is a very well designed "rubber band", with a shiny black plastic similar to that of the 3G/3GS on the side. If you didn't already know what the iPhone 4 looked like you'd think it was part of the stock phone. Except for the usual Apple price premium, I really don't think you can fault the aesthetic of the bumper in person, with the assurance that if you do drop it (and yes you WILL drop it sooner or later) it will most likely survive the fall with minimal damage to a replaceable part.

On the issue of the antenna reception, I personally have tested bridging the gap using my fingers and palm, and only lost maybe 1 bar of reception. I found that to be able to achieve the reception-dampening hand position I have to literally grab the phone in my palm, which is a very unnatural position for me to use the phone. I normally have my thumb on the left side, index finger on the back pushing the phone against my ear, and the middle/ring/pinkey on the right. No problems there.

Still, what's £25 to a £600 phone? It's cheaper and more hassle free then insurance, shock proof and "finger proof". Look at it as the iPhone 4 was designed with the Bumper in mind, and now for £25 more you can add 4 more bullet point features to the list for this phone.

  • Replaceable ruggedised shock resistance outer rim
  • Internal antenna
  • Scratch proof (with raised rim)
  • Sleek all black design with stainless steel buttons

Now the skeptics will obviously argue that "you shouldn't have to buy an overpriced accessory to make the £600 phone work!" And I'd agree with you. But the benefit of said accessory, which actually works out better as a user replaceable part as opposed to being part of the phone itself, far outweighs the extra <5% you'd have to pay. Which smart phone on the market has a user replaceable, ruggedised outer rim that was designed as a feature of said device? :D

People can argue all day long, but the fact of the matter is with a <5% premium you get the best (gasp!) smart phone on the market. With additional replaceable protection. Did I mention it was sleek?

With the reception "issue" out of the way, and the yellow adhesive residue fading away, I wonder what other iPhone flaw will be targeted next?

Yeah, that's what I thought mine would be. Gonna give them a ring over the weekend and see what they say :(

Just got off the phone to them now. Apparently it's an online system error, so if anyone else has the same issue - don't worry, you're on an 18 month contract :)

Oh and to the guy above, what colour bumper did you get?

A convincing argument sir!

Agreed about the bumper, i thought it was just a crappy rubber band until my mate came back to the que with one, i went and bought one straight away, its a very nice piece of kit.

BAH! Went into Liverpool today and missed my reserved unit at the Orange store by 30 mins :( Had my phone on airplane mode for my alarm all night so didn't get the call saying they'd have to sell it... Still paid the £60 deposit at Orange and signed up for a contract..they should be getting them next few days.... THEN 1 hour later ish the bloke phoned up and said there's one available and was I still in town... :/

I also went into the Apple store.... anyone else not massively impressed by it? It didn't feel thin at all which was a bit weird.. even though it really is! I thought all lag on Safari when scrolling down would have been eliminated but it hasn't. Also held the phone round the edge and yep... lost 2-3 bars.

I was probabaly expecting something massively different from my 3G but a lot of it did look impressive though.. loving the multitasking and camera :)

Someone I work with managed to get an upgrade delivered to work from O2 - he only rang them yesterday.

I though O2 was upgrading instore early?

My 3G contract ended 6months ago and I couldn't be bothered with going into a shop yesterday.

A convincing argument sir!
Thanks! I'll be here all day collecting donations for the iPhone 5. :D

For those with the bumper, are you not bothered about the rear getting scratched?

It raises the back (and front) glass about 1mm off the surface it is placed on, so I'd say it is much better then glass directly placed flat on the surface, where most of the scratches are picked up. Of course you can't prevent it when placed in your pocket with keys and changes etc. :)

hi guys i have an existing contract with a 3gs on o2 and want to take out an iphone 4 tommorow can i still do this even though im taking out a new contract not upgrading?

Applecare are kinda admitting error and are 'giving' out bumpers for free, my GF just been on the phone and managed to nap a free black bumper (only colour left in stock apparently).

Just been trying to replicate the reception problem. I am sat in my room with 5 bars on O2. Holding the phone in either hand, ensuring I am touching the bottom left and bottom right and as much of the sides as possible... so far it dropped 1 bar but then went back up to 5 bars. :)

I need to try it in different places where reception isn't as good.

A convincing argument sir!

You can spin it however you want, much like eternal_fantasy has in choosing to ignore the issue and pay more and more to make the phone usable.

I'd imagine just about everyone is a bit miffed about this, and now people are either defending Apple in a blind manner (as so often is the case), or trying desperately to justify other means of which to fix the phone.

People need to start holding their hands up about this phone which is clearly flawed. I do not believe for one second any sane person would declare this a 'non-issue'.

Laughable, it really is.

So decided to head down to the apple store in regent st london...place was heaving and no 32gb iphone4's in stock which wasnt surprising tbh.

Got talking to one of the guys in there and asked him about this so called reception issue thats being reported all over the place. He said yep theres a major issue with it and he said today a lot of iphone4's have been returned for refunds...hes been actually dealing with them himself and was about to go out for a break till i stopped him. I asked him how many had been returned and he said at least 50 or so have been returned today...he said he wouldnt be too surprised if after the weekend most if not all are back lol.

Anyhow doesnt know when they will be getting anymore 32gb iphone4's in...probably next week he said.

So looks like people arent very happy with the reported problem of the reception and are bringing them back.
