I was told in the queue at regent street (by a blue shirt apple person) that the sim free iphones are just that 'sim free', but once you insert a sim, it locks to the network and you're at them mercy of the network as to whether you can unlock it.

now, she took about 5 minutes to explain this, and i'm not sure how convinced i am by her to be honest, but my be worth checking.
One infuriating thing for me signing up as a new vodafone customer, you can only port your number at point of signing contract, so ended up with a new number![]()
Hmmm interesting...i thought sim free meant it was unlocked no matter what sim card you put in??.
If thats the case then i might as well just order a 32gb from a network and be done with it.
Can anyone confirm this??
Ahhh ok should have read further lol...Feek just confirmed that it stays unlocked.
Very happy after upgrading from the 3gs. Screen is amazing but I'm a bit worried 16gb isn't enough now!
As Feek said above, I can just about 99% confirm that is a load of rubbish.
Heh, even though I'm not happy about the signal flaw, I want one and I HATE waiting![]()
Edit: Loving the people bidding £850+ on eBay for the 32GB![]()

Just niot ebay selling the 32gb for stupid money....even online retailers are selling them for £800+![]()
Just realised I don't have Visual Voicemail. Does Orange not do it?
I actually quite like the look of the bumper. Not sure I'll be getting one though!

I was told that they do technically lock to the network of the sim you put in, but can be unlocked by simply connecting to itunes with the other sim in. Which is the same as how the 3GS behaved.
Wikipedia said:Most iPhones are sold with a SIM lock, which restricts the use of the phone to one particular carrier, a common practice with subsidized GSM phones. Unlike most GSM phones however, the phone cannot be officially unlocked by entering a code. The locked/unlocked state is maintained on Apple's servers per IMEI and is set when the iPhone is activated.

Do I need to commit to a long-term contract for my iPhone?
Buying a SIM-free iPhone from the Apple Online Store allows you choose your own carrier and change carriers at any time. iPhone may also be available at a reduced initial price with a contract directly from your wireless carrier.
Would you mind posting a pic?Just applied the Invisible shield to the back of the iphone.
Thankful that i did the back first, its not really invisible.
think i might leave the front alone, and just protect the back as im only going to be lying it on its back.
I would expect a phone to be "locked" when you have to contact the carrier to get them to update your phone's IMEI.
for iPhone 3G/3GS they were locked via Apple's server using the phone's IMEI to identify whether it is locked or not.

On the phone to O2 earlier and the lady was telling me you can't cut a normal sim down to a Msim, saying its 'new/different' technology in the sim, what absolute utter garbage. She said I need a new iphone sim, as its different to normal simcards. When I asked how, she said it just is. Where do they get these people from?
I am forced to wait for O2 to send me a Msim, even though a cut a spare O2 sim down to size (it works) and tried to have my number transferred over to that simcard but no, they just couldn't do it.
Anyhow, on a positive note I have been testing out the reception thing all day and at one point I managed to get the bars to drop. I had to hold it in a manner no one ever would in reality. I have only been at home all evening and seen nothing but 5 bars, tomorrow when I am out and about I shall report back but atm I am looking to keep this. I have no reasons as of yet to return it to apple for a refund.
BTW can someone please tell me the quickest/simplest way to transfer my contact list from my old 3G to my new iphone 4?
Is that the Zagg? Do you have any pictures?
