*** The all new iPhone 4 thread - Keep all iPhone 4 stuff in here ***

What screen protectors and/or cases are people going for? I've had a look on Amazon, it's always hard to tell what is decent quality though.
I'm still half tempted to get a bumber just to protect the edges, but I half think if I wanted a phone that looked like the 3GS I'd have just got a 3GS.

A big part of this phones appeal is the design and I almost think having a slightyl scratched one where you can see the design is better than having a prestine one that is hidden away...

is this specificly bridging the gap or just holding the antenna anywhere ?

I'm in quite a poor signal area at work, i only get 4 bars with the iphone 4, wheas i never got more than 2 with my 3G.

i can loose signal by bridging the gap at the bottom left, however if i dont but still touch the sides i can keep my 4 bars.

I just held it so it won't fall off my hand. which the palm is bridging that gap, there is no escaping from that unless I only pick it up with my fingers.

figures.

i've just been holding it with my left hand, but a couple of inches higher to get round the issue.

I should add that I was just holding it, where my colleague was placing his fingers on the gap with the intention of causing the signal to drop. He can only manage to drop it 2 bars, i managed to drop it by 3 without trying. He was surprise how quickly i managed to do it too.

Software won't cause the difference in the signal loss, all the evidence to me suggest an hardware fault but the user plays a part too. Perhaps if your hand has thick skin from lots of manual labour work then you are less likely to compare to someone younger, softer skin, thus more "conductive".

In actual signal loss, you are correct. However:

"The fix is expected to address a issue in iOS 4 related to radio frequency calibration of the baseband. Readers who saw the original forum discussions say that the issue is believed to occur when switching frequencies; because the lag is allegedly not calibrated correctly, it results in the device reporting "no service" rather than switching to the frequency with the best signal to noise ratio."

So not to take away from any hardware design flaws, you could see this become a non-problem.

Good to know :) Hoping for a software update soon (Maybe at 6PM today prehaps? ;))

[thinking out loud]
It would have been nice if they included a light somewhere (like the invisible sleep light on Macbook Pros etc) that came on if you had a text etc to save you having to turn the screen on to check if you've been away from the phone or had it in a pocket/bag etc. Maybe in a future version...

Right, my 32GB iPhone 4 is ordered now via Orange.

They are expecting a few stock deliveries this week and the chap said the latest it will get delivered is early next week.

Happy days :D

So in short, are you saying it will switch to a strong edge signal instead of a weak 3G? Then that's why for calls, but what about data, aka, online usage? Without a case, would an iphone 4 user be doomed to using edge for surfing?

No, it will switch to what it should be doing. It is apparently a bug in the software that while it is attempting to evade the interference by switching base bands, but during that something is going wrong when then deciding on the base band and just switching off.

The actual iPhone can keep the signal, and the fact in areas with strong signal it keeps full signal even when covering it up shows this, because the signal to noise is far in favour of the signal, so that new functionality doesn't kick in.

But in areas with a weaker signal, the noise ratio is higher, it kicks in the buggy base band switching function.

I think he means a different 3G frequency. 3G is broadcast on the 2110 - 2170 MHz range, and I would assume there are multiple 3G signals being transmitted in this range.

I want to get one and I'm thinking the Tesco deal seems good but I try to call and the number is always engaged, would I be wasting my time going over to the huge Tesco in Coventry? Or should I go for a Voda deal?

so what are peoples throughts on the bumper?? ive just ordered my zagg screen things but thinking about the bumper to. is it worth it for £25 though

I'm looking to get one from Tesco. Your right about that number always being engaged. Still, at least once your through you dont wait long to talk to someone.

I can't get to either of my 2 big tesco's until at least 12.30, any store that gets stock in is gonna be out of stock by then :(

I think it both looks and fits great, but to be fair its maybe £15 worth at best. Still glad I bought it though.

It is quite well designed. It has it's own buttons that line up with the one on the iPhone. So rather than a raised please of silicon or rubber like a lot of rubber cases, there is an actual button there for you to press. It also add very little bulk to the phone, and if someone had never seen the iphone naked before, they wouldn't known the bumper is fitted. That is of course you get black on black, not pink on black.

That said, it is still £25 for a piece of plasic.

So was in Belfast and basically took my mates iPhone off him for the day. :p

Couldn't recreate any singal issues on it, I don't think downstairs in WHSmith really counts as my 3G was none to happy with that location.:p

Due to a trip for a year I need to get from Apple unlocked so it's only a case of getting all the money together.

I'll be heading in a month or so so is it worth it getting O2 to move my current iPhone simplicity of a few months to a new microsim, or just cut my current sim down?

I've been hearing here of people having no luck when cutting them down with the phone not recognising them. :(

Note: I got my original sim in November 2008 when I got the 3G and have since lived out a 18 month commitment.
