3D worth it???

I tried a 3D TV in a high street retailer (which admittedly might not have been well set up) playing Mosters vs Aliens, which seems to be the de-facto demo and giveaway. To me, it looked like the magazines I used to buy as a kid with 3D glasses; more like various planes if 2D images than a 3D image, like decoupage almost.

Certainly not something I'm interested in if this is as good as it gets at the moment.

Buy a good quality normal set IMO.

This. tried to watch a Samsung demo in a store the other day. The glasses batteries had gone flat. Not impressed TBH. It's a fad that will come & go & I for one will not be buying into it.

I would stay away from 3D at the moment and grab the best non 3D tv that you can - the bigger the better obviously!

A Panasonic 50V20B can had for circa £1425 with 5 year panny warranty if you look around and it's as close to the awesome 2D performance of a VT20 as you'll get for £800 odd less!

I am of the opinion that 1080p looks a lot nicer than 3d and doesn't send my head funny after a while. But the main reason why i would pass at the moment is because there is hardly any 3d content and a lot of it seems dodgy at best. I would be more tempted by a google tv :D

ordered a 46" Samsung c6530 yesterday..the next best to the 3d..but not 3d. Like above..think its just a gimmick for just now.

I have a samsung 46" LCD and am loving the 3d at the moment! It's pretty good for movies, but connecting up my PC and running games through the IZ3D driver is amazing! You get a real sense of depth and everything looks very solid, not like the cardboard cutout 3d you get with most films. Haven't noticed any flickering or anything like that either which is nice.

As most have said and I will follow. Wait.. I've not seen any 3D content on regular TVs here yet. But with the differing formats and requirements and no agreed upon standard, you could end up with an obsolete 3D tv.

I can see gaming becoming popular for 3D but movies at home, no.

Saying that though, I was at the Sony and Panasonic showroom in Japan, have to admit it was pretty cool. Amazing..No...

There's hardly any 3D content out there too. When HD becomes SD, then maybe the industry will have a proper go at 3D.

I splashed out on a Philips 40pfl9704. PQ is jaw dropping on HD, more so than my sony 46W4500. Rather have better picture quality over 3D for now.

EDIT: Ambilight on a white wall, is awesome.

pass. i hope it doesn't become the norm one day coz I hate that 3d stuff and like 2d. now if it were like a holodeck then i would be in.

...and beware you will have to then buy the glasses to match what your watching. bluray uses shutter and sky 3d is using polarization - each one requiring a different pair of glasses to be worn.....as if it wasnt confusing enough!
This cannot be true. As said above, the TV will dictate which type of glasses need to be worn.

was in my local Bestbuy shop at the weekend and they have a huge amount of 3D tv's to watch and test. including some in a darkend room to be away from the flourescent lights.

I have to say i found it hard to watch. Not all glasses worked on different tv's and the 3D looked very flat (imagine a pop up book).

After 5 mins of watching my eyes were aching and was getting annoyed with having to wear glasses to watch tv. Especially big Roy Orbison style glasses.

for me it's a massive gimmick and not worth it at present.
if i was you i'd get myself the best HD 2D set you can afford and stay well away.

Bought an Optoma EW538 DLP Pojector for work yesterday. It's HD ready and has 3D.
This, to me would be a better investment. It only cost £470 ex. vat. but personally i'd only use it for the experience of big action movies.....and 3D of course.
You then get the 'near as' cinema experience and i'm sure it would enhance your 3D experience watching on a 90" screen for approx £500 as opposed to £1000 for a 40-50" screen.

However, that said, i do think the 3D technology has a way to go before being accepted mainstream.

To me I've just got an 1080 LCD after a SD 100HZ CRT :D

I'll wait until after the MS/Apple OS work in 3D first.. that will push the price down further on the screen technology.

Well of course it can enhance the visuals but it can't detract from a rubbish storyline.

My point is that it can though. CGI made the Avatar storyline forgiveable.....3D made it even more so. People forgot the story and enojyed the wow'ness of the effects.

It had been said by many that the storyline was a little...err....weak(?), but it was the CGI plus the 3D that made [i think] it the most successful movie of all time.

i actually liked avatar better in 2d than 3d, although would have to agree that aside from the eye candy the film isn't very good
