SETI@home News Vol. 109 (01/07/2010)

I am wondering when I will notice the impact of losing 1 GPU as my RAC is still climbing

Not good news for any peeps trying to get me, But I wonder if my little bro wants do some crunching now and then seeing as he has my other GPU in my old rig ;) :D

Am having a right to do with temps, i thought the 800d case was the dogs b.... etc plenty of room to work in etc. It's fine with 2 x gpu but a tri sandwhich gets right toasty, i get the shakes when it goes over 80 so the last 2 days have had sides off both rigs.
If anyone has any reccomendations as far as another case goes thats better air flow pass me the nod :D

Well if I was about to do a new build for 24/7 multi gpu work it would be the Antec 1200.

Its massive but worth it, 3 x 120's on the front, two on the rear and another on top.
In addition to that another fan can be placed directly over the gpu's on the side panel.
Now if I remember rightly your using the H50 on the cpu so you would lose one of the rear 120's.
Personally I dont think the H50 is the right choice for you as your not a hardcore overclocker, in your situation the extra 120mm rear fan would probably serve you better.
After all, its the gpu temps that are the problem not the cpu.
The fan over the gpu's is a must have feature for me running 3 or more gpu's together.
I believe the case has some preparation for watercooling should you go down that route at a later date.
Its not something I would do, money better spent on more gpu's :D but like I said thats just me.

I have one rig just crunching gpu units and 4 cpu's on mw as they cant get work.
hope they get this sorted soon...

+ 1 on that mate, 2 machines now out of gpu work :(

... I had noticed

Whilst your RAC continued upwards, mine took a dive! I think its the new Random Average Credit scoring system settling down

TBag towers is entering into a critical phase of operations the last thing i want to worry about is temps. I could watercool but it would be a rush and i dont want to rush something i've never done before.
Other than that alls good....polish your wrist rests and limber up for monday :D

OK, wierd, I thought from what I had read that the 800D was pretty good for watercooling but not that great for airflow and extreme (which is what you need) air cooling

Heat is heat, remember that the biggest effect on heat will be ambient temps.

And that a watercooled computer still has to dump its heat somewhere, usually out of a radiator into your room.

1200 is a good case, but there are some crackers out there in the budget range as well, when I was looking recently I came across this: NZXT Gamma Mid-Tower Case which I thought looked pretty awesome for under 40 quid :D

Anyhoo.. yes if you stick with the 800D look at adding more fans pointing at the gpus

:(

Not wishing to contradict a man of your stature MR Halz, I found that when I fitted an H50, it did help my GPU temps as well as the CPU temp. I don't know, but I think it was simply a matter of the H50 dumping most of the CPU heat out the back of the case, which meant the ambient air temp in the case was far lower, which made for better GPU air cooling (my average GPU temps dropped by about 5-6 degrees). I do have what would normally be considered a pretty odd fan set up, but I arrived at it by trying umpteen different configurations, and this one was the one that kept my temps the lowest.

I don't know enough about the case Toxic is using, or how much heat his Fermi cards put out - but I suspect they will push out a lot of hot air.

Toxic: Have you tried the obvious: lots of different fan configurations? Its a time consuming exercise as you have to let your case warm up each time you change things, but it worked for me (I know my heat output is not in the same league as yours, but the principle is the same).....

I can't even get weebeastie filled up enough for long enough to get a stable RAC figure! :(

I feel your pain Biffa. I have 4 CPU tasks in progress and 16 more VLAR's making the GPU useless. Rig 2 is struggling with downloads, they're going at 2kb/sec and timing out left right and center :(

Morning Mr Halz sah...thanks for that input much appreciated, temps were fine when i had 2 cards in there but its fire n brimstone with 3 in the mix.
Antec case looks ok i dont mind an extra bit of noise if it keeps those babys cool :D

Thanks Biffa, i am torn i do want to watercool but not quite ready so am trying to improve the airflow in 2 x 800d. The fan above psu pulls cool air in, the rear fan is h50 push/pull and the top 3 fans exhaust. I cant honestly see how to improve it on air unless theres something i am missing

Hi Area 51
This is the case take a look to my reply to biffa for fan config i probably have it correct but as has been said it's the ambient room temps and this week has not been kind :D

I seem to have all processors active, I'm like you though I just redirected some VLAR's back to the CPU because they were assigned to the GPU and I am concerned that if I keep doing that I won't get any more GPU tasks after a while :(

As someone on the Seti forums said, it would be great if they could work out not to send the VLAR's to the GPU that would solve a lot of headache.

So currently I have 8 GPU tasks and 7 CPU tasks running concurrently, but seeing as we only have today to build up a cache its not looking too good. Lets see what US time brings us.

I just want to get a stable RAC so I can use it as a benchmark for a rig of this size.

Well, it makes sense that the warmer the air going in, the less effective it will be in removing heat. All of my fans are drawing air into the case, except those connected to the H50. Your case has a lot of drive caddies, do you use them all? Can you bin some? What does that internal fan cool?

It's a fixed system inside cant be detached the fan in view cools the hard drive hot swap bays.
I have the h50 p/p pulling air into the case as i thought it would be better to draw what i think is cooler air in, i might give it a try the other way around see if temps vary cheers Area 51. :D

I did that, and installed 2 140mm draw fans in the top of the case. I resulted in better CPU cooling. Logical if I think about it, as I have my 285 exhausting warm air just below my rear 120mm fan! Bit pointless sucking that back into the case to cool the CPU!!!!

Downloads are still failing to complete. Got about 100 per machine in the process of downloading but they get a couple of % then time out :(

A spiffing tiffy Mr kolala well done sah :D

I had quite a few time out yesterday in the way Senture described - ignored em made a cuppa cha and tehy went away :)

Blinking eck its tough getting owt downloaded today...get yer finger off the update button M me poor gpu's are starving man ;):)
