5850 or 460?

BC2 - 5860 wins by 10%
Dirt 2 5850 by 5%
Fcry2 - GTX 460 win by 30%
Metro - draw
Anno 1404 5850 by 10%
Crysis GTX 460 10%
Resi5 460 by 5%

3dmark vantage 5850 by 4%

So OC GTX 460 is more frequently beaten by a stock 5850. only really Far Cry2 which seems to be most nvidia optimised does the GTX460 get big revenge.

therefore 5850 is the faster card overall.

This is why I said the Palit GTX 460 Sonic Platinum 1GB is "pretty much as fast as"a 5850 and never said it is faster than it.

Also, the slightly faster speed of 5850 come at the cost of 115~125% of the Palit GTX 460 Sonic Platinum 1GB's price.

It wins 4 games, the 5850 wins 3 but somehow the 'OC GTX 460 is more frequently beaten by a stock 5850' ? It's as fast as a 5850, end of story lol :)
 
if u want to keep believing that fine. ive got it (including vantage mark3d) that its 4 apiece, except the 5850 has not been overclocked.

if u bother to read some sapphire toxic reviews, the card is clocked just 35Mhz higher on the core (765 vs 735 for a stock model) it is anywhere between 2-12% faster than a stock 5850.

so any benchmarks where the gtx 460 is 5% better than a 5850 can easily be gazumped by the 5850 and a mild oc.

most 5850 can easily achieve over 800 core. infact more like 900 without volt tweaks...

so ill let you do some maths
 
5850 is over ten months older than a 460 yet the 460 still needs to be highly clocked to keep up with it, no shame to the 5850 at all, it can be clocked as well and at current pricing for an 800Mhz 460 I would take a 5850 at £220 instead.

Plus, it is common knowledge that to get a review sample from nvidia, you have to include certain games in the review, e.g farcry 2 which will automatically give it a win for 1 of the games over any comparable ati card.

I disagree with some of the points here. The main one being that at £30 extra over the gtx460 the 5850 is not worth it. I think it is if you are an overclocker and get something like the asus one which can usually clock from 725mhz to 1000mhz core. This will pull the 5850 to speeds faster than a 5870 for only £30 more than an already heavily overclocked gtx460.

I still the the gtx460 is the best card nvidia has out in the fermi range when considering price points.

So you buy the gtx 460 and overclock it and it reaches the next card up, which is the 5850.

You buy the 5850 and overclock it and it also subsequently reaches the next card up, the 5870.

Think the 5850 justifies its price premium over the gtx 460 even if it has creeped up since launch. Seriously if the 5850 was still £200 then there would be no market for the gtx 460.

Dude, relax :) It's not a personal attack on your character to say that the Palit GTX460 is as fast as a 5850!

You linked a review, but removed one of the results from your summary where the GTX460 wins. Now you're saying, ok the GTX460 wins more games, but if you include Vantage they are level. So you are saying it yourself! The Palit GTX460 is as fast as a 5850, simple as.

The Sapphire 5850 Toxic is £270, i should damn well hope it could beat a £200 GTX460! And nobody ever suggested that the 5850 couldn't be overclocked, or that an OC 5850 would not beat the GTX460!

I know :) The point is that is how much you pay for a 35mhz OC on the Toxic. You pay £200 for a 125mhz OC on the Palit GTX460 for 5850 matching performance.

In that sense wouldn't you pay an extra £25 for the asus 5850 and apply an 125mhz OC on it for 5870 performance, I would.
The stock 460 1g is a far better buy, you could OC it to come close/match the palit one which yes gets it into 5850 territory. But to suggest the palit is a better buy than a +£25 5850 baffles me as many can oc to over 1ghz which will absolutely kill the palit for that extra £25.
Just to point out: I am NOT a fanboi in case anyone reading this thinks i'm pro ati. At the moment i have both teams in my rig, and when it's time for me to upgrade I will get the best bang for buck at the time. I do not care for brand loyalty as the brands do not care for us. They just wan't to take our money!............Sorry rant over!

Well, IF you can get hold of one that is. 95% of the time the £225 price range Asus 5850 are sold out everywhere, and the next Asus 5850 (the DirectCU TOP) they can get cost around £255.

And as for overvolting, Asus GTX460 can too. From review they managed to reach 940~960MHz, so people that are more daring could probably get it to 1GHz too. With that said, a GTX460 at 1GHz would be slower than a 5850 at 1GHz (considering GTX460 at 800GHz is a little bit behind 5850 at stock speed 725GHz) and probably around the speed of a 5870 at stock speed 850MHz.

5870 is already dropping in price, so if 5850 dropping to £200 would drop in price as well it would be nice, as it would make it easier for people do decide to get it over a GTX460, especially for people that have an absolute budget of <£200.
 
A quick search on the computer hardware price website shows the cheapest 5850 is currently available for £199.38 and the cheapest palit sonic patinum 460 is £197.99. I'm not sure where the £35 difference figure is coming from?

I recall reading a post yesterday someone mentioning the 5850 price is starting to drop at other places...may be just not yet for OcUK :D
To answer your question, the extra £30 is based on the cheapest available 5850 at OcUK is the HIS 5850 at £232.99

Edited: Saw a 5850 for £199.74 at another etailer with fair reputation, but it doesn't say what brand 5850 is it but with their company name as the brand, so I'm guessing it's like OcUK value cards which the company send you whichever 5850 they wish.
