No, a man or woman should be free to wear what they choose to as long as it's not indecent or threatening to anyone.

I think the ban is based on the false premise that the majority of these women are forced to wear them.

I do believe for driving or any other activity that requires full vision then they should not be worn. The same goes for security situations.

I truly believe that violence is a good thing when it is done to people that deserve it.. yet the UK Law doesn't allow me to do that.. Should I complain about it with the government to change it?

Technically it does, you're allowed to use some pretty heavy force (right up to lethal) to protect yourself or others from those trying to do you harm.

But remember after doing so you will be arrested and taken for questioning (which will be reported in the daily mail as "for arrested for defending old lady from knife wielding rapist murderer"), but if it was reasonable and justifiable force you will be released without charge, or dismissed in court if further investigation is needed.

But your release will never make it to the papers so idiots will still rage about how they can't defend themselves.

How do you match that up with the people saying they feel threatens by people wearing them then?

That is the thing.. I want violence as judgement by my own hands without being bound to these laws.. i.e. If someone starts verbally harassing my woman or any of my family member, I would want to knock the guy out and probably use extreme amount of force to make sure he stays in a hospital for a few days/weeks... But I am still limited in a way due to laws..

That is what I truly believe, yet I do not do it because I am bound by laws against such a display of violence.

edit: I am by no means a violent person in any way... Infact, most people that know me would say I am the most calm person they've ever met, yet I do feel that sometimes, it just has to be done, I naturally get enraged and want to literally knock the person who has caused it out when I do, It is not just my believe, but in my nature... (I don't think I have anger problems btw), yet I have to suppress that to avoid doing some time in prison.

Your fish fingers are ready

This is how it was done in the old days, this is how it should be done now...

The old days also had slavery, no voting rights for women, and corporal punishment. You need to take off your rose tinted glasses.

Why do so many think the veil is an enabler of oppression? Our record on gender rights (both ways) is hardly great after all. Remember a man could not be charged with raping his wife in the UK until 1991, and we still treat women differently from men in divorce settlements, criminal punishments and so on. We also still have problems with domestic violence and so on.

If you want to tackle oppression of women (or indeed men), tackle it, don't use it as an excuse to push irrelevant laws on things you don't like.

I think you hit the nail on the head. One of the bigger problems is that many people feel that this particular piece of clothing is rather divisive. Not being able to see who you're talking to is also a bit unnerving IMO.

How do people in Burkas get along at passport control, and in shops where they have a policy of "no baseball caps/no hats/no hoodies"?

Let me clarify my statement, by threatening I meant something that can physically threaten another member of the public such as carrying a knife or weapon, etc.

There's an interesting case to be made for something like a t shirt that says "**** religion xxx" or something along them lines that would be a slightly different debate.

As for clothing and gear then as long as its not to indecent (i.e stark naked) or carrying around objects then it should be allowed.

What if people say they feel intimidated by those who wear hoodies, should we ban them too?

Congrats you sound like a ****ing nutter.

Also why are you making a point about why people shouldn't be allowed to randomly change laws when you're the one wanting to change the law?

Remember people are trying to make a law to ban it not to make a law to make it legal.

Some places have.

They get asked "can you lift it please for me or the camera".

If they say no "please leave".

Same as if they refused to lower their hood.

Do you get un-nerved talking to people on the phone, or through a speaker at the drive-in also. You can't see them.

Banning things like the burka is based on irrational fear and little else.

I do get unnerved by naked men with wings I must admit. :o

I am happy with the law and fully accept it, even if it is against my personal belief.

That is exactly what I am trying to say... :(

So why did you quote a guy who is against the ban, and start going on about how they should adapt and not make up laws allowing religions to do things?

I must be brutally honest.

I find ANYTHING Islamist offensive. I find the mosques offensive. Why are they allowed?

I find the silly dressing gowns offensive.

I find the silly headgear offensive.

I find the using of hands to wipe the bottom offensive.

I find the greasy beards offensive.

And finally I find a black, cloaked, veiled woman highly offensive.

Its odd, as Im not a racist, I just cant explain why I when I see these women dressed like this I totally rage. I really do.... I would love to go up to them and rip their silly clothes off, and tell them that they live in the UK not in some desert country.

Obviously as I am respectful of others feelings I dont do this, but the point still stands... seeing these wierd veils makes me rage, and I cannot be alone in this, or France wouldnt feel the rage at the veil either!!

I believe you should respect the culture of where you live, not just where you're from.

I'd vote for a ban on full face head garments, open face so the mouth and eyes can be seen should be the requirement.
