Why? What will it achieve?

its more of a preventative measure than a achievment metric.

it will prevent people from wearing them in public and drawing hatred towards themselves, or from making it arkward for other people to deal with them. for instance checking for ID, be that drivers licence, bus pass, bank situations.

schools are my particular bug bear though.

I understand it perfectly. I still don't like it or find it acceptable.

But that's the key point. You have the freedom to like or dislike it. We don't make laws based on what some people like / dislike.

I don't like the fact that you find someone's dress unacceptable, but I'd never consider a law banning you from holding an opinion.

We are not talking about normal clothing we are talking about a face mask. They can wear whatever they like but we in this country do not mask our faces in public, they must adapt to us not we to them. Try walking down a street with a balaclava on a see how far you get and remember to call the person that stops you a racist.

And how is a Muslim woman wearing a veil trying to destroy freedom? If anything, this law takes away a freedom of being allowed to cover ones face in public.

Also this does nothing to help security? Do people really think that a radicalised Islamist woman who wants to attack a place is going to stop as their veil has been taken away? No, such a person would attack regardless.

Frankly, I'm pretty disgusted by the ignorance and racism I've seen in this thread.

So if i walk into a bank wearing a black overcoat and a balaclava, i am not indeed a robber trying to hide my identity, im just a normal customer expressing my freedom ? Are you serious ?

Bank = private property. They can ask you to abide by their rules or kick you out.

I've worn a balaclava in public, with a hooded coat drawn up as well. No-one stopped me or questioned what I was doing.

It was cold.

And besides, I reserve the right to cover whatever part of my person in public that I want.

But it's British culture to be tolerant, banning items of clothing because you see them as foreign (and that's some how bad) is pretty violently against British culture.

and therin lies the problem. do you not see we are exploited because of this? taken for a bunch of mugs one might say

If we ban the veil shouldn't we also then ban any other form of outmoded or outdated or oppressive religious device? If they choose to wear it, thats up to them.

What should be enforced is removing in certain areas, eg banks, post offices and so on.

I've worn a balaclava in public during winter? How about if someone walks into a bank with a scarf wrapped round their face because it's cold? Are they suddenly a robber?

In fact, why don't we ban people wearing scarves during winter because it's a threat to the public. Or a hoody, because in public a CCTV camera can't see someone's face. Don't you see how much of a slippery slope this legislation can put us on?

Okay, when was the last time a Muslim woman in full Muslim dress attack a target within the UK or the USA or France?

In what way are we being exploited? How exactly do you exploit tolerance, when the "exploit" will be tolerated?

This i have no problem with...if its a case of banks, post offices or other public places then they should rightfully remove the veil or be asked to. But then you would end up with all sorts of accusations of discrimination etc etc.

I'm not against it in places where security is a must, say all ports and possibly banks but an outright ban in all public places is wrong. The French argument is that this is to help assimilate Muslims and the veil identifies them as Muslims so it must be removed to help assimilation.

In this case, should a Sikh have to remove their turban or a Jew have to remove their yarmulkes? After all, these bits of clothing identify these groups as people of different faiths.

because (and rightly so) we are tolerant of things such as this, whereas other countries are not (go and try and build a COE building in an islamic country) and thus we get exploited in our own country. there has to be a limit, there has to be an upkeep of the british, scottish, welsh and irish way which is not walking down the street with your face covered up 24/7 because it gives off a sign of hostility

I have a solution, just ban muslims.

Oh but wait, that might be offensive, so the english living in.....england have to go by stupid muslim law.
